City - Cradle Mtn Lake St Clair National Pk. State - TASMANIA Country - Australia
About
Cradle Mountain (1545m) is certainly one of my favorite peaks. It evidently got it's name for it's appearance to a gold miner's cradle, what ever that looks like. This shot was made in the "fall" where Australia's only native decideous tree changes to gold, visible in the distance on the mountain's slopes. It's a special place, protected by UNESCO - World Heritage listing and a very popular place for walking. Unfortunately the optical quality could have been a bit better, however I was trying out a new lens which turned out to be a bit of a dud. note the two people in the centre of the picture.
magnificent view sean - i really like the colours in this. one place i really regret not seeing on this trip. but that's one of the major beauties of this site - being able to see the world through others' eyes. nice to read the additional info too. cheers, joanna
Sean, I see you visited In April/May when the fagus Turns - The Agfa film (possibly) gives a magenta cast, when I used to operate a Min Lab that was a characteristic of Agfa Films then (20 years ago - Thanks for your comment about my Cradle image - you can see lots of other images of Tassie in my portfolio. I think usefilm has changed so much recently - I used to get 20 or so comments but usually only 1 or 2 now. BTW the Name Cradle Mountain - First mentioned by Joseph Fossy in 1826, said to be named by him for its likeness to a "Cradle" - a Rocking cradle. Although there is a Gold Miners Rocking cradle it bears no resemblance to Cradle Mountain.
