Nice candid moment. It looks like you are scanning from a print? This gives a particular effect that you may or may not want with regards to texture and patterns. Some people like it for the "character" it lends an image. The scanning software and PS have settings to minimise these effects if you'd like. Scanning from the neg (if possible) can often extend the tonal range of the digital file.
