Hi Justine
Well ... the black velvet works magic .. but I am tired of it. I like shooting "natural" but being in the midst of our Winter season, the gardens and nurseries are bare of any colour. Thus I have to buy my flowers from florists.

I would highly recommend that you use a tripod. Having done the backboard/velvet "thing" for the past month or so, I have become so used to using the tripod that I can't imagine not using it.

Something else I highly recommend is really looking at your object from all the possible angles. Shoot, shoot and then shoot some more. If you are shooting at home, get up and download and look at the images. See if you like a specific setting/angle/background and then continue.

I don't see well and it took a long time for me to go "manual on f" I don't think I could go ever completely manual as I rely on my camera to do the focussing. So if your eyesight is good, then experiment with your camera's settings.

Don't have your flower/object too close to your background, and don't sit on top of your flower/object either.

Avoid direct light. I have a home-made L-shaped backboard that I clip my velvet onto. If I find there is too much light on my flower, then I place a black board over the top of the L to divert light.

Don't shoot in bright sunlight. Best would be a day with a couple of clouds. I shoot very very very early in the morning or late afternoon.

I always use the macro setting.

What else can I think of?

Last thing ... when buying your flower(s), choose the best looking one possible. Really inspect the flower and check for bruises. Difficult to see with the eye but once you photograph, every bruise and nick will show up :-((

When shooting "natural", check what is in the background. Not just at eye level, but check out the ground. Are there little stones or dead leaves lying around? Are there dead flowers on the plant? All these things could spoil an otherwise fabulous image.

I can't think of anything else right now. If you see one of my images that you want to know more about, just ask :-)

Good luck and remember ... have FUN!!

Linn

Absolutely stunning. You really have a superb eye for detail and composition. Any tips for the not so gifted...aka me????? (Apart from the black velvet) ;)
