Hi Christian, To be honest, No, I wouldn't be surprised. That's exactly what you aptly describe as "yeux du coeur". Very intriguing how different aspects can appeal to different persons. I hadn't paid much attention to that window (yet) as I was absorbed by the message the contrast between the two buildings sends. But now you pointed my attention to it, I do see what you mean. thanks!

Cheers,

Hugo

Thank you Hugo for sharing these impressions. You are right, photography has to do with Saint-Exupéry's "yeux du coeur".
In this case, would you be surprised if I told you that I feel that the slighlty shining window near the bottom right of the image is a strong evocation for me of "someone behind"... ?

The moment I saw that in my viewfinder, the title "Gotham" came to my mind.
The dark tower that you interpret as a demonic crown is actually from Montreal's Notre Dame Basilica - built in 1829. The shining one is the Alfred Building, built in 1931, with some art deco features.
Thanks for sharing.

Hi Christian, I've been pondering over the comments by Mike and Matej for a while, and they both make sence. The contrast between the "old" and "new" is there, as is the omnious presence of the demonic crown that Matej describes.

If I let my imagination run freely, this photo also carries the message of a new star in the spotlight, closely observed by the establishment. Whereas the building in front looks mean and lean, ready to pounce, the experience and wisdom of the sophisticated older generation is still in control, but their domination is fading...

That's also what I think is the essence of a good photograph, and maybe the kick I get out of photography; the subjective explanation of an atmosphere, a mood or the message carried by a particular photo.

I'm fascinated by the dark blue tone of the sky. I think it is of cruicial importance to the context of the photo.

Cheers,

Hugo

Unlike Mike, I don't see it quite as old in the shadow of the new. Yes, the building in the foreground is grand and all lights are on it, but it is the ominous dark presence of the building in the rear that dominates the image. It's like a figure-head ruler, and in the background the hidden yet strong entity that either already wields the real power, or is seeking to take it. The four shadowy towers are like a demonic crown.

Thr exposure is perfect. Looks like the old in the shadow of the new. I like the architecture of the building in front, hard to explain, but it looks like it would have been futuristic back in the '50s. It has sort of an old Sci-Fi look to it. It's an interesting image.

Very beautiful and well composed work; one dark building, one lightened up. I love that dark sky; great mood!

Thanks again for your interesting comments :)

Well done Christian, the dark blue sky contrasts so well with the yellows of the building lights. Don
