Hi Hermen, I just posted a lenghy answer, but apparently, it didn't come through.... I hope to be able to retype it....:(
As for point #1, I think that although I did notice the TL tubes immediately, they are a nice touch to the photo. On the other hand, I don't actually miss them in the reworked image.
Concerning #2, the thought of removing the perspective did cross my mind, but initially, I decided against it because I thought it would also flatten out the image. Now I see it (your reworked image) I do think it is an improvement. As if taken with a technical camera.
And, finally #4, in order to prevent the feeling that the building seems to stop in the void, a frame would be an option, or a more extreme crop. On the other hand, an extreme crop would in fact remove the 3D effect (or at least partially so)
I like the alternative version alot better, I think it has been improved considerably by straightening out the verticals. Very good job, Hermen! (Great book, hey?)
As to "Glitch" #3, you are probably right. Maybe you could've even be more extreme in cropping it off though.
As for your edited version, I considered that, but was afraid that removing the vertical perspective, the image would've been more two dimensional. Now that I see it, I think it definately is a very sound option. It balances the composition, and works very well.
As for Glitch #1, the TL tubes immediately caught my eye, and although they do remove some of the abstractism, I actually did like them.... (I didn't miss them in the edited version, though)
Hi Hugo, thanks for your extensive comment! About 'glitch #3': I composed the shot this way on purpose, I think if I left in some of the background, the composition would have been less abstract. So the background would have been distracting rather than an interesting element to break the image. About #1 and #2: I agree with you, did some rework. Better like this?
Again, as with the #1 shot of this triptych, this photo has not the same amount of tension and appeal as the first triptych. The lines and curves do have a nice perspective, but as there's nothing else to break the image (or add to it, in that respect) the few glitches attract the attention:
1. The two TL tubes in the building 2. The converging vertical lines 3. The factthat at the end of the curved facade, the building seems to stop in the void.
The photo has a very good potential and there definately is something about this shot that makes it appealing, but I also feel there's something missing... (maybe the last two things overlap a bit, if you know what I mean) Still, the shot is very well exposed.
