Robert: This is a wonderful portrait. It's evocative of childhood and trust. You are very lucky to be her uncle.

You can see from that cheeky smile that she is full of mischief, and the "peek-a-boo" set-up really brings that out. The eyes are sharp and have a little catchlight that really brings out the twinkle.

This is a wonderful portrait.

As for the flatness, can you adjust it in Photoshop? Almost all of my scans and digital capture images need adjusting like that.

My only other positive sugestion is that maybe you could have asked your niece to tilt her hed a little, in line with the tree trunk.
