About Question for members on drop shadow framing - left or right hand side? Is there an "unwritten rule" that says it must be on the right hand side?

Thank you Mark :-) I liked the way it was opening it's "wings" as if to embrace time to help it "un-bud". Sadly, it stayed this way :-((

The strong pink edges is what attracted me to buying this rose, how I wish it would have opened up.

Thank you once again for your praise and critique :-))

There's no rule on drop shadows, but I generally go with the photograph's lighting. If in doubt, I'll go drop shadow on all four sides. I think this is the strongest rose composition you've done so far!

Hi Linn, beautiful image, a little overexposed the superior central part of the rosebud. Regarding the drop shadow Frank Sala is right: the address of the incident light indicates you clearly where the shadow should be.
My best, Felipe.

Hi Jeroen, no, I never read that book :-) I'm not shy to ask, as I believe there is no stupid question :-))))

The lighting. Oh boy! What an effort I went to! We had a lot of wheeling and dealing with NASA and they eventually relented and sent us one of their new, multi million dollar investions. Very secret, so I can't divulge too much! Hope you will understand? Any how, we had to build a studio, all as specified by the NASA fundi's, with various kinds of air flows, scented candles, etc. We also had to install a state-of-the-art music system, playing only 70's music. Apparently the music waves and air flow makes this lighting thingamaling work to maximum output. Then we had to adopt a chimp to hold up the "light", and he was taught to detect the best possible angle for maximum quality lighting on an image.
Well, the rest is history ... NASA is happy with the outcome, the chimp is happily employed and chewing on a banana, and I am pleased with the effect.

I suppose it would have been much easier just using natural light, out on our front porch with the Labbie as company?

Pulling your leg my friend - brain dead at the moment as I am learning the Element tools and time is running out to hand in my homework!

First of all: nice pic, good exposure, very black background (perfect!) and I love the detail.

Hmm, about the drop-shadow. I didn't even think about it, but it's always on the right. For me, t
that is....
It's in the 'You always wanted to know about photography, but were afraid to ask'-book.

So, I guess you never read that one, huh ;-)

Litle quetsion: how did you arrange the light, was it natural or a set up? It's very pleasing

Dear Linn, I like your "prepared" rose very much. The different colors and are beautiful and by the way - it's razor sharp. It's lovely composed.

Regarding your question, I personally prefer the right hand side.

Regards, Gerry

Linn,
Beautiful rose as usual. If I use drop shadow I normaly place it as the image is lit.If the light on the image is comming from the right then the drop shadow would be on the left.

No 'unwritten rule' that I've heard of, Linn ~ in fact, I very rarely put a drop shadow on the right.
Beautiful rose once again ~ you've really perfected the art of floral macro photography and it's a joy to see.
Kind regards, Chris
