Taken at the same time as Kim's "Standing Silent" photo. We went heron hunting together awhile ago and spent a lot of time creeping through thick, muddy undergrowth to get a clear shot of our subject. We moved ever so slowly and quietly only to learn the heron seemed to care less that we were there.
A low ISO and lack of lens power means my version is a bit wider and lacks detail, but I think it's decent. Unfortunately, I didn't record any specs for this photo, so the shutter and aperture info are guesses. I'm pretty sure I used a polarizer and a teleconverter X2
A superbly focused heron among the lily pads. Fine DOF and colour, make this a lovely birdie image, Becky. I also like your informative 'about'., Animals are often like that. You half kill yourself to get a shot, and they either don't care, or move just as you start to press the shutter! We are very much the intruders!
Man, that green really whaps you right in the eye, doesn't it? :) I think I'd actually de-saturate this a little, although I love the green! I like the composition here, with the heron looking so natural in his/her environment, and so completely still! It would have been cool if you had been able to get all of his/her reflection, unless that introduced other elements. By the way, I just saw your nomination of me in the Donor Only forum - not likely to happen, but I'm *hugely* flattered that you think so!!! Thanks Becky!
I came across what I think was a great blue heron this evening and found it backlit by the late sun. It was fascinating to move laterally and see how it changed color with different lighting. The hard light is a little too much here for me - it makes it difficult to get shadow detail...
Love this picture as it really show us the bird in its own habitat. The colors are really saturated and as you mentioned, you are lacking details in the bird but still makes this shot excellent.
