You can drive along the dry riverbed in the summer months when there is less rainfall - you grab a Native guide at the information center/museum and he'll take you further in, showing you some "secret" ways to climb that you cannot plainly see from the ground. If you take the Tour Truck, they don't let you get off the truck in the riverbed.
