About I took this dawn image of the river Somme the day after my wife, daughter and I visited a British war grave cemetery near the Somme on our way back through France. The tranquility of the scene was utterly at odds with the hell that the troops lived through. In a cemetery of 1300+ graves only a handfull of the dead were more over 25 years old. Most were killed in a couple of days in March 1918, shortly before the end of the First World War. It was an immensely moving experience. We all shed a tear for the young men dragged into a crazy war of attrition. The quote below is not exactly poetry but equally emotive and I hope will continue to resonate for centuries to come:

'We can truly say that the whole circuit of the earth is girdled with the graves of our dead... and, in the course of my pilgrimage, I have many times asked myself whether there can be more potent advocates of peace upon earth through the years to come, than this massed multitude of silent witnesses to the desolation of war'

Wow, what a contrast in experience and a lesson in how the world works. What is now is not what will be later. As your photo proves .... such peace on top of such violence and fear.
A very thought provoking image and statement.
Thanks Barry,
Peace, tim

Great photo and an amazing story, and quote. From the picture you only get a feeling of serenity, hard to imagine all the going on of years ago. Alison

A very moving picture Barry, the older you get the more you appreciate what you owe all those young lads.

doh! I hate it when people like me come along with such a comment. I should have paid attention to the focal length. Those river bends can be tricky.

Jim, thanks for the comment. The image is acutally totally level - I use a spirit level on top of the camera. The illusion is caused by a curve in the river and, I suspect, isn't helped by the very wide angle lens.

Beautiful capture. My only recommendation would be to be conscious of leveling your image. It appears that the water is draining to the left due to the tilt. Great reflection.

I love the serenity. The blood red sun is a real eye catcher! Sad but interesting story. Thanks for sharing.
