About Something different. The last of the three strand-alones... I was looking for one with the same blaze as the previous two, but didn't find anything to my satisfaction.

This one is probably as radiant, though, but obviously of a different nature. No composite image this time. PS only for converting to B&W. I just know you've been waiting for this!

Thanks for all your enquiries in the recent weeks!

All constructive comments, as usual, are appreciated.

Tech Specs:
Aperture: f/4.5
Shutterspeed: 1/160'
Exposure comp.: -0.3 EV

Other than resizing and converting to B&W no PS tricks.

Cheers,

Hugo

I love this photo. I think a photo should be able to pass on emotion and this one does. The B&W effect causes the photo to be more compelling to view.

A charming shot. I think I agree that the b&w is well used here, although the color version is very effective as well. A couple of months ago, I posted a similar shot--in a vignette frame, however. :-(

Verder alles goed?

Dear Hugo,

sorry for the late response. You're probably right about converting the image into BW as the image lacks a bit of tension in color... I thought about working on the middle tone contrast to get the feet a more stencil painting look... but don't have PS CS at hand @ work. ;-(
take care,
thilo

very nice hugo. babies feet and hands are so perfectly small. you have captured their essence right here.

fairly minimal noise for such a high ISO as well.

Christian Barrette   {K:21125} 9/4/2004
This reminds me of the effect I get from saying the same word again and again. After a moment, I loose its meaning and become fascinated or amuzed by its sound. In the case of your image, I tend to forget that these are toes, part of feet, part of a body. The close-up and the soft background free the subject from its usual setting. So I get fascinated and amuzed by these... hu, how do you call them ?

  0

tom rumland tom rumland   {K:14874} 9/3/2004
hugo, it just occured to me that we've seen more of willem than of you ;^) but it's understandable as you must be very proud. i know you are. i like what you did with the dof. the toes clearly demarc the borders of the focal plane. it think it adds a bit softness and tenderness to this already very cute photo.

i think i dig the color version better tho as it seems more "alive". i know it's a subjective perception on my part, but b&w makes think of things gone by. imo, a new life should be celebrated in full color ;^) regardless of my personal prefrences, an excellent shot! got to see him doing well.

take care,
tom

A delightful image Hugo and as you kiss each precious toe you are taken in with that incredible soft and delicate baby scent. So tiny and so perfect. Treasure every moment because 'they grow so fast' is a true cliche. My best piece of advice: 'don't sweat the small stuff'.

Hi Carmem, thanks for taking the time and reworkign the image. I have considered a similar thing, but I found it too much a cliché, Anne Geddes styled sweet image, which is something that is not quite my style. It would've worked though. Good job, maybe a slightly smaller blow out area?

I agree, though, that it needs a frame:)

Again, thank you. Interesting rework!

Cheers,

Hugo de Wolf Hugo de Wolf   {K:185110} 9/1/2004
Hi Stephen, In photography, I stick to the original file as much as possible, IN GENERAL. Obviously, the previous one was a major exception, which I did as an experiment, to find out if anybody would notice. As a designer, I'm pretty adept at Photoshop, if I may say so. (there are some more obvious samples in my portfolio...;o) But when it comes to Photography, I tend to stick to the PS techniques I also could've achieved in a darkroom. In this case, I did play with the levels to increase the contrast. Thanks for your comment!

Cheers,

Hugo

Hi Thilo, Thanks for your comment. I attached the colour version of this shot to my reply to Carmem. Interesting thought, making Willem look older than he is. I had to ponder about that one for a while. In a way, I do agree with you, but on the other hand, I wasn't too pleased with the colour version. I played with the NEF file, but still no real improvement. As you know, I'm not in general a fan of converting colour photos to B&W, but in this case, I thought it was the best option. I do find the noise (or better, lack thereof) in this one pretty amazing, considering the 1600 ASA setting on the D100.

Cheers,

Hugo

Hi Carmem, I checked the EXIF info, it's 1600 ASA. And I remember taking this shot in the near dusk with only natrual light. Attached, you'll see the colour version, but I think B&W is the best solution in this case. (Not often that I say that!) Thanks for your elaborate comment, thanks!

Hi Verena, Thanks for your comment. I agree, I need to hurry with these shots. Willem grows very fast. Thanks for your remark about the composition. I've played a bit with it, but decided to leave it as is. (only cropped a small strip off the top) I always feel ambiguous about centered compsoitions, but I think there's no real alternative here...

Cheers,

Hugo

It is wonderul Hugo it is just beautifully composed and the tones are wonderful.
I had to read the about a few times just to check there was nothing I was going to miss this time lol
For some reason I didn't think you were a big fan of PS - although in this case it is only desaturation and maybe a little contrast adjustment ?

Dear Hugo,

ahh, good old 105mm nikon macro. I knew that this lens is at least good for something ;-)
the soft background and the "mild" tonal range fit in perfect with the subject. it reminds me actually of hands that tried to hold together. very decisive moment =)
would love to see the color version as I think it looks more "fresh" than the bw. you make your chil older than it is.
take care,
thilo

I know these are not your feet, Hugo! This is very expressive and illustrative of how the whole body need not be shown inorder to convey a mood or emotion or feeling. I like the composition and range of tones, too.

Hallo Hugo
Weer eens wat anders
Mooie copositie in Black and White
De onderkant van de voeten valt weg in de schaduw bij mij. Als zodanig is het geslaagd. VBraag me af hoe het orgineel er inkleur uit ziet

Hi Hugo
An excellent photography, a lot of lovely and delicate, the soft tones of grey are delicate and are in tune right with the atmosphere of the photography!
cheers

I still remember a great famous photographer saying, you don?t have to leave home to get an outstanding Wooow photo, if you have an artistic eye, you will find one in and around the house. You did show us a tender, the soul within the shape of the body, or the most important part of the human body, I consider it a masterpiece of work, that?s my weakness towards the babies. Marvelous priceless job, Saeed

Mooi plaatje en ook een mooi gebruik van scherptediepte, al zou het van mij iets meer mogen hebben, zodat de teentjes boven wat minder zacht zouden zijn.
Maar zondermeer een mooie foto..

Hi Hugo! 2,5 months old (?) ... I think he?s had a LOT of milk :) A soft and cute presentation, no doubt! Love how the feet hug each other :)

Hi, Hugo, I can how proud of your son you are.. and this simple, but this perfect shot says everything.
The grainy effect (asa 1600?) fits the B&W version.. but I don?t if it?s true that people look better in B&W..
Like you do.. I love colors.. so, I?d like to invite you to see a color version from proud uncle : image # 484643.
When I ?ve seen your photo, I remembered this Márcio?s capture, and wondered if the same effect couldn?t be applied on a color version of your son?s feet...

Great emotional appeal, anyway. A honest 7.

Hi Hugo,

good to see that there is still enough time for them to grow before they're running all the time ;)

The composition in almost the middle works for me

Cheers,
Verena

Hi Tiro, I couldn't agree with you more! It sure is cute. The colour version is way to pink and creamy (good tones come with age, or so it seems....;o). Thanks for your comment!

Cheers,

Hugo

I guess there's only one word to use: Cute. It's amazing how these two small ones shall carry us the rest of our lives. The DOF is perfect, and it's perfect to convert this to B&W in my opinion, a baby's skin has a tendency to be too pink - at least when i am trying :-). This is excellent in my opinion.
