Adjusting fo rthis, you would just move the highlight slider on the right to the left until you get to the first significant mountain in the histogram. This will stretch the tonal range of the image to use all 255 steps available in a grayscale image. I thnk the somewhat clipped blacks are fine in this shot, it adds that bit of punch that's need w/ B&W photos.

Hi Gayle you're right...this is a better example for a histogram check.
One thing w/ B&W prints...is that, generally speaking, you would want a little more contrast than a little washed out - most of the time.
Checking the histogram, you can see that the highlight detail is a little low.

One thing w/ B&W prints...is that, generally speaking, you would want a little more contrast than a little washed out - most of the time.
Checking the histogram, you can see that the highlight detail is a little low...and also that the shadow detail is just getting clipped alittle bit. Both of these things indicate underexposure...ie: the majority of the histogram is to the left. Idealy, you would want the histogram to be evenly spread out from highlights to shadows, with both of the extreme ends tapering off right at 0 0 0 for black and 255 255 255 for white.

This is very nice, as usual, with it's textures and contrasts. Do you still amuse yourself with this primitive technology or is this left over from years ago?
