Jennifer, Thank you so much for your comment, it really does mean a lot to me. About the noise, you already know from one of your previous post how much noise bothers me but I am glad you like it despite the noise because I felt I made the right decision to keep the detail of her skin rather than get rid of the noise.....yet it still bothers me....

Karen, Thank you so much for your comment and for what you mean to me. I value your friendship and opinions. Karen, I am glad you like the photo and even find the digital noise "pleasing" but it still bothers me - in my B&W film days, grain was my enemy also - unless I was looking for that effect - point being, I don't like grain or noise unless I want it there.
Thank you Karen, Jeff

hi jeff - i've been away for awhile, moving myself to a new home & trying to work my way out of many of my boxes before embarking back into the world of usefilm. What an inspiring & dramatic change of direction in regards to your work for me to come back to. I really appreciate the heartfelt honesty of your dedications above as well as your desire to explore capturing women in a more natural way. I love the shot above & prefer it left as is, with the noise, rather than the touched-up (even if minimally) version below. There's just something more honest & real to your original shot. It works great cropped right in - so much life in her eyes & expression. Great use of b&w, strong, dramatic contrast & tones. Very beautiful. I'm excited to see where you're going to go in this new direction. Congradulations!

Jeff, love the close up of this one. I know that the noise can be annoying, I think I have come to actually like it-or perhaps its because it shows up so often that it just doesn't bother me as much as before. I think you did well to choose to rather keep the noise instead of sacrificing the skin's texture. In a way, for me as in a personal opinion, the noise seems to really emphasize the texture even more. BTW, I even like what Carol did to the image also, it has a nice graphic quality to it. If I were to change anything it would be to brighten the eyes up just a tad bit, not too much just to make them pop out even just a little more. And thank you for your words, I feel that you have done the same for me, it works both ways my friend~

Carol, I really do like your version also, it is a different mood than mine. I Love how it is contrasty, high key but you kept the detail on the edge of the jaw.
Thank you Carol but when I get a better camera, I won't be smoking anyone, I'll just be saving myself some work.

I wasnt sure if you would like what i did or nto..i was actually trying several things but her skin kept coming out so discolored and blotchy...it may have been the poor resolution. at a 72 dpi theres not much you can do..
ps..I nebver realized you were having to do that much work on your images. If you were to ever get a nicer camera you would smoke all of us!

BTW Carol, I could have gone as high as 75% on the layer opacity but it would look slightly blurred, the object was to minimize the noise - not remove it altogether, that looked too obvious.

Carol, I like you version for a different effect.
Here is how I did it. I made 2 layer copies of the original. On the top-most layer, I used the Threshhold tool and adjusted it to get only the darker areas where the noise is, then selected all the darker areas using the wand tool then "Select - Similar" on the menu.
I saved it as a selection, deleted the threshold layer, activated the other background copy and applied the selection.
I reversed the selection so all the gray areas were selected and pressed the delete key to delete all the lighter areas. That made all the gray clear allowing it to come through from the background.
I then deselected the layer and applied a 1.5 pixel gaussian blur on the layer. that basically blurred the noise. The blend mode was Normal
I then adjusted the opacity of the layer until the noise disappeared without looking blurred - about 65%.
Lastly, I applied a mask to the layer and used a soft black brush to bring back some detail in the hair and areas of the face that were affected.
Thank you Carol, for your time and effort to help me solve a problem, I truly appreciate it.
Love you, Jeff

Sorry, forgot to let ya know I added the equalize tool to overall image..then curves to exagurate the highlights really pulling her eyes out I thought.. but without really editing her skin at all...

Jeff. I was playing around in curves trying to keep the photo natural but also playing off your strong highlights..let me know what ya think... Your version is much nicer. I was trying to make the most of the noise with out adding a filter...Thanks for humoring me! She is such a beautiful woman..with alot of natural poise..her eyes are stunning..the emotion you have captured..

Carol,
What do you think? Slightly reduced noise without affecting skin texture. Used Photoshop to do it.

Very earthy, and quite beautiful.
Ya know, Jeff, I find it irritating that the biggest lie of the modern world is makeup advertisements! I mean, how misleding is it to show a model that has been heavily photoshopped in an ad promoting how beautiful THEIR makeup can make you?
I like this shot. ;) Give us more!

Should have looked at the next notification. Thank you Carol, I do mean the dedication and you do mean a lot to me. With your help and inspiration, I have come a long way. I guess I am moving to a more "real" and natural direction photographically - not that I am going to stop Photoshopping but use the tool more wisely.
Au Contraire Carol, I am very happy, proud and honored to be your friend, you have helped me so much, a lot more than you know. Love you too, Jeff

Carol, I've tried in Neat Image by tweaking the settings very low but if the noise is cleaned even a little, it still softens the skin tones. I am trying alternatives but I think the only thing that would help is a Canon or Nikon DSLR.

To me this does look so much better..it's as if what were looking at really exist and she is a real woman..I hate the plastic filters used by so many..I was trainer for Glamour Shots and worked as a makeup artist for years so maybe thats one reason I now hate the madeup fakeness of some woman..Anyway, Jeff this is beautiful..I do agree with the noise problem but maybe you can find a middle ground? reduce some noise but keep the natural grain? that would be awsome!

Hugo, I agree about the noise but that is the result of my less that adequate camera. In my previous color posting of this image, I used Neat Image to clean up the noise but doing so softens the skin too much and the detail on the skin to me is more important. I ahve to put up with digital noise until I buy my DSLR.

Hi Jeff, There's something that I find very appealing in this shot. She seems to be completely at ease, the close up composition is very well balanced and I like the lighting, creating a good contrast. The natural beauty you refer to is well captured. I feel a bit ambiguous about the noise. The noise does create a natural element (or better, emphasises it), and eventhough it doesn't quite do justice to the texture of the skin, I think some noise works well in this image. Maybe it's a bit much, or it's the nature of the noise. I'd rather have the grain than nois, but I can't elaborate on why. Grain somehow looks more natural. Hope you see what I mean, and it doesn't really affect my opinion about me finding this an excellent shot.

Thank you Patrick, actually Yulia does have makeup on in the photo but the technique I use is designed to enhance and bring out the natural beauty of the skin - "flaws" and all because a woman is beautiful even with her "flaws" that is what natural beauty is about.
