I didn't really consider this as a macro, since I was using a standard rather than a macro lens. It was also 1 from 10 other shots, but I was experimenting. I think you hit the nail on the head with the tripod comment, but I also need to think about the wind - it always seems to be blustery when I am out and about.
As you say, I just need to use a tripod, slow down and the shots will come.
