About I wasn't sure whether to upload this image as my scanner just can't cope with the dynamic range, but I like the image and so decided to go ahead. The transparency is lovely but this is the best I could do with the scan - blown out clouds and too dark shadows! I reckon my scanner's DMax can't be more than about 3 and this image has a dynamic range of more like 4+. I can see more expense looming on the horizon.

Ah well, anyway, this is a somewhat different shot to my norm, taken at Beer in Dorset, England. I always visualised this as a panoramic and it was one of the first shots taken with my new 50mm (25mm in 35mm terms) lens. It was handheld and had an amazingly short exposure of 1/250 sec. I always wondered what those big numbers were for on the exposure scale! Most of my shots are measured in seconds not hundredths! And I didn't use a single filter.

I chose to include part of the deckchair to the left with the gap to the main bunch and I think this works to give the image more interest than a single bunch of deckchairs. The single red deckchair also helps break up the bunching.

Barry, yes I can see the problem you have with the scanner, certainly needs a little more range.

However, the composition really makes up for it, brilliant. I do think the red chair should be moved on place either left or preferably right though, just to put it on the third.

Very nice shot, Barry, though I think I see what you mean about the dynamic range!!
Believe it or not, I took the shot below on the very same beach in the summer of 2003!!
Quite a coincidence!!
Best regards, Chris

I love it. I took it into PS and did a little color enhancement/adjustment to see if that would help. I got a little more white effect with it. I love those chairs regardless. Makes me miss the beach (and think of the Hamptons - though I've never been...).

Certainly a very attractive composition and for somoeone who was brought up on the South Dorset coast (Poole), brings back memories of the end of the day when all the holiday makers had gone home.
