Hi Ray,

thanks, nice to hear from you again... You're not missing much, as there's no panoramic size here, I uploaded this photo before UF provided that feature. It sure was a magical morning, one of those moments where you realise how small one can feel oneself amid the vast emptiness of the dunes, the absolute silence and the golden light...

Cheers,

Hugo

wooooooowwwwwwww..
your old work.. that i don't have seen.. but always is "time"..

TIME
(Clark/Christie/Mercury)

Time waits for nobody
Time waits for nobody
We all must plan our
hopes together
Or we'll have no more future at all
Time waits for nobody

We might as well be deaf and dumb and blind
I know that sounds unkind
But it seems to me we've not listened to
Or spoken about it at all
The fact that time is running out for us all

Time waits for nobody
Time waits for no one
We've got to build this world together
Or we'll have no more future at all
Because time, it waits for nobody

You don't need me to tell you what's gone wrong
You know what's going on
But it seems to me we've not cared
enough
Or confided in each other at all
It seems that we've all got our backs against
the wall

Time waits for nobody
Time waits for no one
We've got to trust in one another
Or there'll be no more future at all

Time waits for nobody
Time don't wait for no one
Let's learn to be friends with one another
Or there'll be no more future at all

Time, time waits for nobody,
waits for nobody
Time time time time waits
for nobody at all

Time waits for nobody
Time don't wait, waits for no one
Let us free this world forever
And build a brand new future for us all

Time waits
For nobody nobody nobody
For no one...

very incredible simple mood!

...............................CONGRATULATIONS.............................
on this well deserved award it looks superb. I am at work just now (2am!) and I just sneaked in to see what was going on. I can only see the composition in a small size as the internet programme we have here doesn't afford us the luxury of the large size..Here goes then...

I know it is an older shot of yours Hugo but I never saw it back then. I love those beautiful pastel colours in the sky that ring the burning intensity of the sun. I also love the silhouetted lone figure and their footprints going up the sand dune. I love too the contours and shadows in the sands....a truely wonderful composition. Well done to you. All the very best....Ray

Thank you for your comments on my Making Electricity. I am still new at this. I looked over your display of many fine photos. Many show different moods . I especially like this one with the footprint trail leading to the person enjoying the beautiful desert sand dunes against the colorful sky. It is very relaxing. The composition unlike mine is very balanced.

Captivating image. There are some things about it that bother me though. With the darkness of the image, I think a silhouetted person (at the top of the dune) would work better than one with the horizon cutting them in half. I like Saeed's version because is makes the person more visible. If the person wasn't there, then I'd prefer your exposure. I also find it odd that the person is looking to the upper right because my eyes are naturally drawn to the bright area of the image on the left, and I'm wondering what the person is looking at that's more interesting than what you've captured.

Splendid minimalistic composition. To me, this photo is beautiful just the way it is. I love he grandient colours in the sky and the contrast of the shadows and linght in the sand dunes. The placement of the person is perfect. Beautiful and harmoneous forms and shapes and light and mood are magic. My favorite in the series, Hugo. Congratulations!
I wish you and yours a Happy New Year

wow
I like this allot Hugo
Rolling hills of sand I don't find easy around here and you have captured this very well.
I like the lighting on the sand as it creates layers in the hills and the sky/sun is great.
I try to picture this without the person and I think that the person is great !
The shadowed foot steps leading to the silhouetted person is the cap.
Very well done sir.
I hope my ramblings make sense, I'm not good with describing my feelings and a bit intimidated to comment on your work due to this.
Highest respect for you and your work.

Hi, Hugo, thank you for your comment.
As you must have read else where.. I had some troubles with my left hand.. and since I can?t see a good photo without commenting..I decided to keep away from UF for a few weeks, to avoid typing.
Thank you for your attention and friendship.

I love deserts..so, I?m suspect ... the colors are great and including a person was a good option, IMHO.
Cheers, my friend!

Antonella Nistri   {K:21867} 11/12/2004
Hi Hugo, I don't think that the silhouette of the man admiring the sunrise is an element of disturb.
Unless the dunes have a very particular and geometrical shape, maybe with a high contrast ( thing impossible at this time of the day ) they are nothing really new.
The human presence adds a lot, IMO.
Great capture ( although a little soft...have you used the tripod despite the fast time? ) and light, many congrats!

Hi Roger, thanks for your comment. The haloed effect was created by some overexposure, and a rather poor image quality. The fuji digital camera lacks some dynamic range, and the level tweak and resizing I did was already enough for some JPEG compression errors. Well spotted, though...:)

Hugo

Hi Christian, Thanks for the comment. I agree on the exposure, it was one of the things I didn't replace the Fuji Finepix S602z when it broke down in the sandstorm which is brewing in part III. Besides, as Verena implies, my timing was poor, too. I should've been there a few minutes earlier, but driving through the desert in the middle of the night is not an easy task. Normally I rely on film for these shots, but somehow, it didn't cross my mind; the beauty and tranquility of the desert sunrise was too overwhelming...;)

Cheers,

Hugo

What an interesting halo effect in the sky. There are clearly differentiated zones in it, almost as if there was slight posterization. Very dramatic, and a nice complement to the other one. Here, of course, the shadows are just perfect.

Hi Rebecca, thanks for your comment... After this trip, I stopped using the S602z, as it just wasn't durable enough, and it died on me, beyond repair. I think the image quality i (was) rather good on the white balance and saturation. Also, it has a great macro option. Apart from the poor durability / sturdiness, it has a tendency towards colour aberration; and quite severely so. Spent some time retouching that in this image.
Furthermore, although the optical zoom is good at longer focal lengths, at wide angles, the w/a distortion is horrendous. (this obviously depends on what you compare it with, but having a DSLR now, I know I should've gotten one sooner)
Cheers,

Hugo

Hi Elisa, I agree about the dune, I thought of taking out my shovel, and get some more sand up there.... Unfortunately, by the time I returned, the person has gotten impatient, and had run off....:) Just kidding of course, thanks for your comment. Sometimes, you just have to take the things the way they are...;o)

Hi Hugo! As to the composition, I?d like to see a bit more of the beautiful dunes (+ footprints) at the bottom, and, if possible, a tad brighter dune tone. The sky is fascinating, and the man admiring it adds a lot to the mood.

I love it! I love the inclusion of a human form. Lovely image. My son has this same Fuji, and it does much better on white balance than my S5000, and the colors are more vibrant also.

  0

Christian Barrette   {K:21125} 11/9/2004
This is marvelous. I think the composition is ideal with the human presence in front of "Ra". The only drawback is with the exposure. This is a very hard conditon where the sun coming out forces to shut down the exposure, while the dune would command a lighter tone. This would have been a case where a colour negative would have given a better dynamic range. With a digital, it would have been the case for a double diferential exposure - probably impossible in your conditions.

Hi Hugo!

WOOOOW! Magic light indeed! This is spectacular, absolutely beautiful! I love it.

In my opinion, this is perfect! Love the lighting, (not too strong at all, looks awesome). Nice soft lighting on the dunes, you would have been robbed of it had you waited much longer.

In this image, I LIKE the person, (didn't like the people in the last one). He is sitting, admiring, contemplating, ETC. AND, there are tracks which show you how he got to where he is sitting. I LIKE those tracks...

PERFECT COMPOSITION!
Well done, Hugo!
Lori ;)

Beautiful light, and the tones of the sand are lovely. I love the footsteps in the sand too. If I was going to be picky, I'd say that the halos around the light are a bit 'unnatural', but to be honest, I think its a great photo with a wonderful composition!

I think that the inclusion of the person works well here too and in this instance I think seeing him/her in shadow, almost in silhouette, is good. There is a lot of noise in the sand (trying to avoid "grainy" :-) and I wonder why - did you bring that area out of shadow detail?

Hi Saeed, Thanks for your comment, the description you give about the desert expresses the feelings I experiended quite adequately....

Ofcourse I don't mind your manipulation, I do like it alot. I also agree on the timing of this shot, which could've been improved upon. Verena's suggestion, about a few minutes earlier might've worked too. I like your version alot; excellent idea.... I still need to order a print of this one, and I'll settle for yours...) In my upload, I decided to stick to the image as it came out, but still feel a bit ambiguous about it....

Many thanks, my friend!

Cheers,

Hugo

The desert has a unique beauty all its own,, the climate is very hot and dry. Not many plants and animals can survive, but the ones that do are adapted to the torturous climate. That?s why most of the desert photos shows kind of life, to draw more attention to the theme and for comparison purpose, unless the sand dunes shape has its own attractive figures beside the light and shadow, I like your arrangement here by placing the person in one side.To me without knowing the story behind the shot, a delay in capturing would?ve helped to have a better atmosphere, or a manipulation or editing wont be bad, I?ve done very quick and small correction, hope you don?t mind just reduced the a mount of the sun rays, so that the photographer and the including person not suffer a successive heat :)cheers,Saeed

Hi Hugo,
I think that this time the person on the right completes the composition;
he/she sits agains the dunes and strong wonderful Sun and make a good counterbalance for them; also like the traces on the dunes which make a subtle path;
this shot makes me asko what is goingo to happen next: will this person sits here for ever; will this person wait for something or maybe, what the most natural, will this person stand up and walk to the right to complete the path?

well done
regards
Lukasz

Hi dearest friend!!!!!!!
Nothing else occurs to me than contemplate all this beauty and play with the lines cleverly used along the picture... I also like the croping and the tones degradee from white to blue in the sky... Hummmm... a moment of peace at the end of my day... Thank you!

A beautiful sunset. Really a magical (light) moment.. I like the composition with a person for giving size and meaning to the image. Well done!

Hi C, good point... I have my doubts too, as it creates an confusing elementto what the primary subject is; the person admiring the view, or the view itself. In this case, where there are no predominant elements in the landscape to grab and hold the viewers attention, I chose to include a person in the composition, but I do see what you mean. In http://www.usefilm.com/image/279217.html, most persons would create a huge distraction....

Cheers,

H.

Beautiful. Love the softnes, the warm light and the nice shades. I always have mixed emotions when I see persons on a image like that. It's nice to have a reference to get a feeling for the dimension, on the other hand I like shoots like that as a pure abstract study of forms and beauty. There is no right or wrong, just different point of views. Great job!

Reminds me to dig out my own pics from here! Presumably you took a lot more photos at this time, and a little later the shadows and sunlight may have interplayed a bit more?

alone against the sun...waiting for the magic moment

would be interesting in the shot half a minute earlier...

the sun is already a bit to strong, not totally sure, but personal opinion...

Cheers,
Verena
