About Subject background: Silhouettes of people, lighted from the back from signs, a freeze in time & shape. Whiskey in the bottle, Tom Waits voice roaming... what can you hear?

Personally, I like the details here (the falcon, the bottles ...) =)

PS concept: IR filtering, changed the toning, worked on the silhouettes. tried to make the image moody & creepy ;-)

As always: Honest feedback highly appreciated. No flash philosophy.

Sorry for my lack of comments these days.

Hi Thilo,
very nice capture, specially the composition is very original!
i very like the duality of human and non-human units,,non-human units are very prominent in the composition whereas the humans are seen just as silhouettes.. this creates a very original view..

Cheers
Baki

Hi Thilo,

Re: "I guess this is somehow subjective.": Of course it is! The subjectiveness of photography is what makes discussing it so very intriguing and fun...:)

Thanks for the reply!

Cheers,

Hugo

Hi Hugo,

I see the point with your more focussed version... definitely helps the picture to get a faster "overview". as for the toning: I guess this is somehow subjective. will try to make different versions, as the people here have different thoughts on that topic =)

great to see your rework though, makes me feel happy.

Hi ursula,

hast vermutlich recht, so richtig gruselig ist es nicht ;-) war vermutlich nur live etwas gruselig, wie ich in der rockfabrik mit der kamera rumgerannt bin. die wollten mich erst gar nicht reinlassen =)

LG,

Hi Thilo, I really like these kinds of shosts. And this one is no exception; the natural lightin as well as the liveliness is excellent. I also completely agree with the no flash philosophy; any flash would've killed the atmosphere.

I don't think you took advanage of the full potential of this shot, though. I think the tonal range falls just a wee bit short; the blacks seem to be dark grey (especially in reference to the frame). The slight blueish tone also emphasises the somewhat limited tonal range. I think a "true" B&W version, with a bit more contrast would bring out the consiness and intimacy of the scene a bit stronger.

The same applies to the composition. As the viewers attention is drawn to the right hand side of the image, I think a (minor) crop on the left hand side would further emphasise the cosiness and intimacy. But I do like the division and balance of the composition. If you crop off a bit on the left, a very small crop preserves the composition, only closing it up a bit more. (Also in the attached image)

Very good shot though. Excellent photo...:)

Cheers,

Hugo

Hi Thilo...

Excellent shot... I feel it very strong in its message...

Love the work you did with the silhouttes in the foreground, eventhough they play a strong part in the overall compositon, mood and atmosphere, they do not get in the way of the signs and the bottles in the center... Which by the way, tell it all...

The shadows appear to me mystified in the music... No sound, no laughter, no conversation... All paying attention to the soul of music...

Cheers,

MaLuisa

close, that is for sure...

don't agree totally with Kevs rework, but at least a warmer tone would work even better for me...

strong addition to his music

Great photograph Thilo, it also conveys a strong atmosphere. I like the "No Flash" philosophy and this works super here, the silhouttes fade into insignificance with the advertising saying it all !

Very good indeed, well seen and a super capture!

Best wishes,
Steve

I like it! The silhouettes have the exact amount of light to be seen perfectly, but are dark, and they represent a high contrast aganist the blinding signs.

Nice work.

...in my CD palyer...wish it had more grit to go with the refernce to Tom -- in his voice you hear the sound of 1000 smoked cigarrets and a 1000 bottles of gin -- "I got a bad liver and a broken heart" -- "the piano had been drinking, not me" -- sorry for the rework - but my vision of Wait's world ... :)

"... when you need him?" I don't think you do need him for this particular shot. All the (near-)silhouettes make a statement all their own. The kind of scene not to walk into without at least a little trepidation.
