About You don?t have to read this!

I?ve not long been back from the most remarkable funeral service I have ever been a part of, or even attended! Thank you all so much for your kind thoughts and wishes ~ it means a lot to have the support of so many good friends on this great community!

The service lasted for around an hour and ten minutes and the sense of God?s help and presence was tangible, even palpable! The 300+ strong congregation sang the five hymns and songs with feeling; the tributes from Roland?s two son-in-laws and a lifelong friend were amusing, yet deeply moving; a poem written and read by a brother-in-law was amazing; and I really knew God?s help as I led the service and gave the ?address?!

There were more people at the graveside than I?ve ever seen before and around 180 stayed or returned for refreshments after the burial. Then there was a half an hour in which anyone could say a few words about Roland and many did! It was incredible! He was a man who was greatly loved, who accomplished so much in his 49 years, and one that I shall miss a great deal!

For any who might be interested, here?s a brief extract from my address?

I remember driving Roland to the hospital, not long after his return from Canada. I remember the way he spoke so calmly and easily about his work with Space Decks, despite the pain in his head and the trouble he was having with his vision. I remember visiting him in Yeovil Hospital and being impressed by his seemingly total lack of fear or anxiety. And then my first visit to Frenchay Hospital, following his surgery, where once again there didn't seem to be the slightest indication of concern or worry! Indeed, despite his condition and prognosis, he was still able to see the funny side of things and smile with the rest of us!

Why so calm?! Why no fear or trepidation?! There may well have been a number of reasons, but one stands head and shoulders above the rest and that's the fact that Roland knew the peace of God! In other words, He knew the truth of Isaiah 26v3, which says: "You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, whose thoughts are fixed on you!" For him it was more than words on a page, it was reality! It was life itself! And in his various hospital beds, as never before, Roland proved the truth of that statement! As he faced up to a cruel and terminal illness, 'the peace of God' ~ a depth of peace that He alone can give ~ was his portion.

Thanks for listening! And thanks for being there!

My best regards,

Chris

Chris; your picture here has a distinctly sombre tone and yet at the same time exquisite lighting. I think this the photo fits so well with the sentiments you expressed for your friend. He sounds like an exceptional man, and your excerpts made me a little teary. Well done my friend-- both words and photo. Craig

Dear friend, I has read each line of your about and I was made a knot in the throat, because you have made notice the big thing that the faith can make in a good man like your friend Roland, I am very believing but I assure you that I don't have that exemplary faith that had your friend, but I pray to God every day so that he helps me to have it.
Definitively now Ronald passed to another life next to God and to his dear beings that left before him, God blesses you and I congratulations you for this incredible pic: D

Chris, a tranquil picture to remember a friend by. Sounds like it must have been an emotional roller coaster leading the ceremony. I'm not sure I could have coped but I'm glad you managed so well and that you found some many positive aspects that should help everyone involved cope with life without Roland.

I didn't have to read it, but I'm sure I'm one of many who were glad that they did. That peace, which passes all understanding, is precious. We don't all have the faith to retain it under such strains, but those who do not only retain the privilege of that peace but also the joy of influencing those around them. I'm sure many will want to search for the open secret of that peace. And we know they will be met more than half way!

Chris, this is wonderful, the "about" the photo, and the inspiration you & Roland give to all of us. Today you celebrated the life of a special person, although he will be missed, he accomplished more in 49 years it seems than many will in 80 or more. Thank you Chris for sharing your life and taking us along on this incredible journey. Through you, Roland has touched hundreds, of people he's never met. Take Care my friend, Dottie

Your photo really is fitting.
thanks for the small excerpt into your life and feelings, it makes this photo site far more then just cold imagery. You have helped place human emotion into your photos and allowed us deeper contact from a far. This is what I love about the internet. A friend or loved ones death always gives us the opportunity to live what life we have more fully. With the reality of the gift we were given.
Thanks for your sharing, it is so special to me Chris.

A wonderful image Chris that tells me you hold some Golden memories of Roland. I'm sure today was very difficult for you and all who knew Roland but I'm also sure He's at peace and happy.
I looked at my watch at 1.33pm and thought of you.

Hello Mr S :-)
It was with trepedition when I read your about on your "One foot on the bridge" image. I have been trying to follow your "abouts" for news on Roland and though I am obviously sad to see that his health did not return, I am pleased to read this image's "about" and about Roland's faith.
I can imagine that though today must have dreadfully sad, it must have also been filled with lots of good and shared memories, and even some smiles - maybe a very big one from your dear friend Roland himself? :-)
Please accept this generous (((HUG)))
Mrs C

Chris - it is a very lovely picture - very fitting. The about is extremely moving. 49 is so young and there are obviously so many people who are going to miss him dreadfully, but also remember him so very fondly.
Margaret
