Thanks for the tip Koen. Do remember seeing that painting before. Hadn't worked out his name. I also vaguely recall someone on use film recreating it brilliantly but sadly only a vague memory! Nice to hear from ya. Will keep in touch.

Yes it is magic... Has a feel all of its own. The main feeling I always got there was sense of sadness (maybe something to do with the shipwreck?) and isolation. I've never stayed out there at all... usually just driven there from my Dad's for a few hours. Last time I was there I took my sons and they liked it too!

Just seen your portfolio again... assumed you had to be an Aucklander to have got to Whatipu, my favourite place in my home. Not many Aucklanders know about it and even less tourists of course, as it's not on the route to Piha or Kare Kare. Amazing salt marsh there, my Grandmother used to go to a cave beneath the cliff there where they hosted ballroom dances. The waves used to splash over the dance floor boards at high tide. Now it is filled with sand and the sea is two kilometres way, with the salt marsh and dunes having grown inbetween. Magic place, no where like it in New Zealand. You stayed at the fishing lodge?

I like the dead-center, frame-filling composition. It adds weight to the massive rock (as if it needed it :-). A way to highlight one property over others...

Are you familiar with Arnold Bocklin (the Swiss painter)? This photograph of yours makes think of his romantic work "The Isle of the Dead", of which he made several different versions. A short text you can find on http://www.artchive.com/artchive/B/boecklin.html
Too bad I could not find a photo of the more detailed versions online.
Anyway, this is - among other photos of yours - a strong image.

Ian? unusual beach scene to say the least ? beautifully composed and photographed. I spend a long time looking at this picture and it is the best among several great ones in the 'Aramoana? series. Love this image and I'm gonna keep it.
Roger put it well ? sad and enigmatic! Thank you C

So the earth shows us her weathered bones. Nice moody shot. IMHO the sign adds little. This photo of a great rock does have a sense of weight but the picture is really static. Such place are often hard to photograph from a better vantage point. - John B

Ian looks like an amazing rock form.. I wish there could be a reference object to emphasize the size of this rock.. nevertheless, I can have some clue by the sea waves.. I found this view very interesting.. cheers..
