About This is an image from Brothers Water in The English Lake District looking south to the Kirkstone Pass. It's the lights from a car descending the pass that you can see making a light trail in the top centre of the image. The image was captured about half an hour before dawn on the only calm day we had in the week. The exposure of 3 minutes allowed me to get the complete light trail from the car from the top to the bottom of the pass. I used a 3 stop soft ND grad to tone down the bright sky. The sweep of the little bay was an important foreground consideration to help lead the eye round the image in a circuitous route rather than the usual full-on approach of many reflection images. In this way the eye comes across the light trail as a bit of a surprise rather than, I hope, being drawn directly to it.

Beautiful aesthetic study. The reflection and original landmass have melted or merged together, creating this abstract and surreal form. Very nice work.

Very artistic composition, perfectly exposed in this difficult light situation. Awesome landscape, as many others in your portfolio !

Pleasant and superb reflections joy! The geometry of the mountains with their reflections are well balanced in the composition. Thanks very much for your interesting explanation.
Compliment for all! 7+

Chris, thanks for your comments. The Fuji also has a maximum 30 second 'in-camera' exposure but I put it in bulb mode and use a cable release then just time the exposure using my watch. Of course this approach requires some trial and error but the histogram review will indicate how many more stops are needed to fill the sensor's dynamic range, i.e. to move the highlights on the graph most or all of the way to the right. It's then just a matter of doubling the exposure for every stop required. The 300D has the same facility as my friend uses his for astrophotography taking images up to 5 minutes exposure.

Great technique as usual Barry, sometimes I feel very limited by the limited maximum timed exposure of 30 seconds on the rebel. The reflection really adds a dramatic touch,

Chris

Nice image. You're right that the curving foreground really makes this image much better than a standard reflection shot. I also like the way the hill on the left expands to fill in the image to balance the foreground. Well done.

Stunning.
Amazing landscape, with good contrast and a mirror image reflection on the lake.
Bravo,
Khaled.

I like this image a lot Barry (quite similar to one of my own too - http://www.usefilm.com/image/653584.html - so that may have something to do with it! ;-) ). I have a real liking for images with reflections and drama and this has both in copious quantities. I particularly like the mists coming down into the centre of the shot from the left. Well shot!
