Canon gear is more heavy than Nikon. For bird photography the 300mm isn't enough. Even 600mm is too short for small birds. Compare the weight of Nikon and Canon lenses and think about to carry more than 1 lens. Nikon doesn't have a 700-300 VR (IS) lens. Compare the Nikon 80-400mm and the Canon 100-400 IS. They are both up to f5.6. Shooting pics in the late afternoon with these lenses will reduce your speed. The Nikon will not work with TC. About Canon - I don't know.
Take a look at this link http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/forum.asp?forum=1029 here you can find Canon users as well as Nikon users. Consider to get a walk around lens and for your birding, try to get a second hand 400 or 500mm (cost $$$$) and combine with a TC. (Can you carry a Canon 400 or 500mm???)

Thanks Mr. Heilesen,

thanks for your quick reply. MY question is which one to buy. *canon 10D* or *nikon D70* i went to local electronics store last night and checked out D70. Its great. But as you said the 70-300mm lense is slow on this. Once i worked with my friends canon 300d and i felt the same too. But my need is 70-300mm for sure. I am getting a little serious about brid photography and kind of really looking for a image stabilized lense.
I looked on ebay and sofar i found
Canon 70-300 IS USM for $400-$500.
for nikon VR is more than $1000. Why is this huge differnece in price? If i buy a 10d i can buy good lenses for real good price. this is what really driving me to consider 10D. whay your view on this?

Thanks once again

Thanks to your all for comments. Moving the bird (cropping is possible), but I choose to show the real picture. Lenses for Nikon D70. I'm just going to buy a new one. I have a 60mm Macro f2.8 which is perfect. The 70-300mm f4.5-5.6 is ok but too slow. The lens also must used with tripod. Therefor I'm looking for a VR model. I have read not the best information about the Nikon 200-400mm f4.0 G VR. The cost of the lens is about USD 5,500. My need is also more than 400mm for bird photography. I therefor plan to buy a Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 VR for my everyday walk around lens. This one can use the 2xTC and make a 400mm. For wildlife I consider a 500mm either a new Sigma f4.5 (this has only manuel focus with TC's) or by luck a Nikon 500mm f4 (secondhand).

Perfect caputure... Subject kind of looks like going out of frame if you can place it in right lower end it would look wonderful.. just my personal view..
