Would love to get any input/critiques from more experienced surf photographers. In particular I was having some trouble getting the right composition and crop that I wanted. Also, is it worth getting a monopod for work like this? I didn't really feel like bringing the tripod out on the beach.

Thanks,
Chris

Wow - this looks so cold. I love taking the surf shots and haven't gotten much lately this summer with the negative tide right now. I think a monopod is a great idea. I don't use anything because there are so many great surfers in one area that I tend to just hand-hold and pan the beach. But if you have a long heavy lens, get the mono for that stability and relief.
From what I'm learning (from the surfers) is to get the shots from here on down - they LOVE to see thier water spray from the fins on the board. Also - any shots of the fins OUT of the water is a great one too - they love to see the air. Hope that helps. :)

I think you've done a pretty good job here. I've tried photographing many surfers, windsurfers and kitesurfers, and find I have to shoot loads to get a few decent ones. I don't use a monopod, and struggle to find a good vantage point from which to work. Maybe I need to rig up a platform a few metres out in the waves...

Not a surf photographer, but I know what I like, this would be an example of it! Dottie

Looks to me like your composition is just fine Chris. I wouldn't bother with a monopod since you obviously don't have a problem with camera movement with the zoom lense. You're shooting at 1000 sec at 400, FAST. Fire away!!

I like the closeness of this surfers' face. Total concentration!

Good shot,
Lori :)

I am not an experienced photographer, but in my opinion, you have done an excellent job freezing the action. Great shot! 7/7
