For exposure you can follow Alan istructions or simply expose for highlights or shadows and not leave decision to your fully-automated but stupid camera

Great scenery, but the lighting spoils it. You needed clouds in front of the sun to reduce the contrast. In the absence of clouds, if you had a tripod, you could've used exposure framing and combined several layers in photo-editing.
