Hi Jim, Mt brother is a serious twitcher so I called on his expertize to identify woody for you. This was his reply: Male Red-headed Woodpecker: Melanerpes erythrocephalus: Widespread in open woods, scattered trees including suburbs. Feeds in trees and on ground; often hawks insects in flight. Red head; white wing patches, rump and underparts. The call is a loud Kweeer sound. He is very green as he does not have a sighting on his life list. :-) Enjoy. Alison

I looked him up in my bird book...he doesn't really look like a red headed woodpecker...or any other type. I wonder if he isn't deformed in some way.... his head looks really strange. Anyhow...nice shot!

I agree with Rob, Jim, but I don't have my book with me, as I'm not at home right now. In any case, a very nice capture of him! Dave.

Thanks Rob, that sounds pretty good to me. I know it is not a Piliated Woodpecker , so I'll just call him Red:) Thanks again for taking the time to answer.

Good capture James . If I am not mistaken that is a Red Headed Woodpecker . I am a little unsure because of the spots on his wings . Normally , the wings are solid black , but this may just be an immature sub adult . The Red Headed is indiginous to your area , so that's my best guess .
