Gayle -
This is a great shot - The lighting, perspective, and composition all work, but more than that, this image elicits the imagination of the viewer, provoking diverse memories and speculations. I appreciate your kind comments on my lacewing picture.
Best regards,
David Millard

Congratulations on POD Gayle. A true touch of nostalgia, a simple street in small town, anywhere in a simpler, easy time. The contrasts are superb with the bright sun adding a lot of warmth. Everything about this gives it that 50's look. Well done, my friend.

Hi Sis!Congrats on your 2nd POD! Nice shot and as others have pointed out, the "framing" on left by storefronts and on right by trees and old light post (adds to "back in the day" effect), makes "pull" of shot draw you to bicyclist.

The vertical edges of some storefronts seem to have shutters exposed which also add to the "old community feel" as opposed to urban bars on storefront windows. The choice of tonality and contrast lend a nice nostalgic wash that seems almost to purposely "wash out" the distant horizon of buildings;adding to the effect of memory's fleeting recall of images that reside in the simulacrum of "back in the day...". Well done!

Bright Moments!

Gayle, congratulations! At first glance, I thought of our downtown street! The tones and composition do tend to have a nostalgic feel--I hate to say this, but at first glance I thought this was a Terry Ward image! You two have the "eye" for what a lot of us miss. Best regards--Bill Voizin

Thanks for your critique and for stopping by...regarding your comment about door being darker than rest...to my eye the level of contrast i chose renders some areas dark and others very light...similar to a lith process in a darkroom...i use Paintshop Pro8,but don't use levels/curves so don't know their effects

I love it. This is where I am moving towards in my work. I just believe that if you use black and white and eventually you get a grab of it, you have such a nicer tonality.

Good Image Though.
Shouldn't you mask just a little bit the left (door) part and raise a touch the lenels or curnes not to be darker than the rest of the image?

Yours
T

hey you! thanks for breaking down the technicals and for your kind sentiments...i had to shoot quickly as the bike guy was about to scoot and i also didn't know how long i had the sidewalk basically to myself...wanted to give the feel of just strolling down "anystreet-USA" past or present...

What I like about this is it could be used for a lesson in composition and focus, the long verticals on the left and shorter ones on the right frame the image and the guy with the bike is perfectly placed. The word PULL contrasts with the him PUSHing his bike. Nice to see you on Home page as PoD Gayle, deserved and hope it takes some into your portfolio. Ian

Fantastic Gayle, congrats on POD for this excellent composition. As you say just a simple shot, taken from a great angle though, really love the 'sign to "pull" you into the scene'. The excellent work on it does indeed give it something special

beautiful shot, Gayle. I love the after-shot processing you did - it all adds wonderfully to the feel of the piece. Gloriously captured & composed. A well chosen photo for pod - congratulations!

This does have a feeling of nostalgia. Reminds me of simpler times. It reminds me of the street leading up from the downtown drugstore in Ketchikan, before all the tour ships took over and turned downtown into a teeming mass of people. Great work on this!
