down river from here in the Gulf of St. Lawrence German U-boats operated and sank shipping during WW II - this was trip a few years ago where I visited Gros Ile, the immigration quarantine island for Quebec. In 1848, the time of the potato famine in Ireland, many emigrated on poor condition ships and died. Many died on this river before reaching the new world.
