About I decided to re shoot this scene using film , just to see if the F5 could do any better than the D70 . I ended up liking the film version a LOT better . Long live analog !!!
BTW , that's Pink Floyd's The Division Bell , pressed on aqua vinyl ,1/2 speed mastered and imported from Japan , sitting on a custom Linn Sondek LP12 .

Howdy Bill
Here is a couple of key points to consider when comparing the D70 version against the F5 version . The D70 shot was a carefull set up where the F5 was a 30 second effort . The D70 shot that was posted was the best of 5 that was taken where the F5 shot was the one and only shot that was taken .
Also , ( and this is my main complant with the D70 ) , look at the overall color tint , especially the background wall . Notice the red color cast ? The F5 version is simply MUCH more color accurate . This is true for every image .
Also , as the images get blown up to larger sizes , the D70 gets worse where the F5 gets better .
My opinions of the F5 now that I've had it out for a while ? Compared to the D70 , it is vastly superior in EVERY regard . Out in the field ,where I am the majority of the time , the F5 is in a different league . The AF is a LOT faster and locks on almost every time . But , the biggest thing , is the accuracy of the exposure meter . It is WAY better than the D70 and even the F100 . Very little risk of blown out highlights with the F5 where it is VERY common with the D70 . Surprisingly , when doing tripod type shots , the F5's images are noticably sharper . It must have something to do with the design of the mirror mechanism .
Overall I am very happy with it , and I would never even consider trading it for ANY digital SLR short of a D2X . Period . D1X ? Not a chance .
With the F5 , the person behind the camera is by far the limiting factor .

Thanks for taking the time to comment . I appreciate your input . Take care .

Hi Rob:

Well I have looked at both images closely...and I have a bit of a preference for the analog shot... So now that you have had the F5 for a while... what are your impressions? Just curious... BTW; Great shot. I like the minimalistic aperture...took a great focus!

Cheers,

Bill

Thanks Bryan . The D70 version of this image is still listed further back in my portfolio if you care to have a look . This turntable is simply incredible . It has undergone modifications that has transformed it from an already awesome performer to something that has to be heard to be beleived . It was a "significant" effort and investment but worth every penny .

i dont know wether to be impressed by the image or by the record player and whats on it... there is noithing like manipulating images while listening to Pink Floyd, it almost makes me wish i still sniffed glue... but whatever.... this is a great image i would have liked to have seen the d70 version as well... congrats on the image and the equipment!!

Thank you Paul , you are too kind . You know , every time I sit down to relax and end up spinning a few tunes , I realize that all those 1/2 speed mastered and direct to disc albums that I worked so hard to acquire , are more valuable to me now than ever before . There is a soothing quality to music done on vinyl that digital just has not figured out yet . Thanks for taking the time to comment .

What a very nice minimal DOF shot, Rob!
Ah, there is NO denying the quality, and subtle harmonics that analog vinyl brings, eh?

...and what choice taste in music, my friend!!

Thanks Johnny . You're right , that Pink Floyd album ( blue vinyl ) was VERY difficult to come by . Costly too .

O the turntable picture. I have about 3 pictures of mine my self. Great shot great turntable, and most of all GREAT RECORD. Rare find too, hard to find Pink Floyd records on colored vinyl these days.

When people come over to visit , some say "good grief , records ??? " Well , this setup will literally pound the daylights out of virtually ANY cd player on the face of this Earth regardless of cost . It's a mechanical marvel that just sounds way better !!! Sometimes , newer isn't necessarily better . I thought it was only fitting to shoot it on film :)
Thanks for your comment Michael .

What the heck is that, just kidding lol, great shot, anyone born in the later 80's may not know what the heck this is, hate to admit I remember 8 tracks and reel to reel recorders, oh the memories!

Michael
