It is a little cryptic - I am glad you got it...

Clever! I wonder how many viewers get the title?

Stefan,
A very nice study of texture and colour.. Looks like the mark of Zorro! I love the yellow...

You have a gift for seeing the abstract form and isolating it from the large and busy background.

Hi Kim - this was a midday excursion so it would have been quite the wait... What I like about this light is that you get an accurate idea of what these look like during the day, they really are this yellow! This particular rock may not be baby-bottom smooth but the black stuff you see is yet another lichen growing there.

*groan* (in response to Dirck's attempt at a joke!!!)
The colour is what captures the eye and draws me in... Hugo had a good suggestion about waiting for the sun to go down even more to get some deep shadows along the rock, but I like this just the way it is as well. The rock sure doesn't look smooth though... the detail in this image makes it look rough like 50 grit sandpaper!

Stefan, I'm really lichen this one! (somebody had to say it! :) This is really quite beautiful - it looks as though the yellow has somehow seeped up through the cracks in the stone. Wonderful texture and color contrasts!

Hi Stefan, There are a few things that make this shot very appealing; first, the contrast of colours between the yellow lichen and the grey tones of the rock, lightening the area where the lichen has died. Secondly, the very lifelike textures, and last but certainly not least, the well balanced composition. Very interesting. The only thing I'm wondering about is if there was a bit more directional light, striking the surface of the stone, the element of depth and geometry could've introduced, adding a forth element to the photo.... Just something that crossed my mind.

Cheers,

Hugo
