Stefan, yes there's little doubt that a good digital SLR will deliver more dynamic range in the shadows. It's very important to use ND grads with transparency film in order to keep everything within the dynamic range of the film. However, having invested in a Nikon LS9000ED scanner I do find that I can now extract a lot of detail from the shadows that my flatbed got nowhere near.

the moment between night and day... only the golden mist is announcing the sun.
I like the colour contrast, the opposite curves and colour areas, seperated by the horizontal mist. perhaps I would have preferred a slightly higher point of view an less symmetry, but I'm not sure.

Hi Barry - I have renewed respect for your landscape work after getting the slides back from this expedition... Seems like the dynamic range is simply too large to allow me to dig just about any detail out of the shadows here. Could be in part my cheap scanner, but mostly I think the scene itself may not be ideal for a slide capture.

Pretty much straight out of the scanner

My guess (preference) is a slight lightening of the near rocks for want of a bit more detail (I know its there :) may lead the eye better through the rest of the image. The sky looks fine from where I sit.

Hi Kim - the manipulation is a gradient dodge to hold down the sky a little (you can see the ripples of the gradient if you look closely).

Thanks Carlos - it is good to have you remind me what is important about this :-)

Hello Dirck - we are talking the the same photographical language then and having similar thoughts about composition etc. In one way it is a good thing (understanding) but it also makes me worry about conforming to "the way it is supposed to be" :-)

Hi Thilo - I'd be curious to hear what you think my typical stuff is... I certainly have no idea :-)

really impressive! the sky doesn't look manipulated... i know that it is, but sometimes a little editing is necessary to give back to the eyes what has been lost in photography... mist is absolutely perfect...

Hi Stefan,

well, I can't wait to see the film version ;-) the rising fog is great, but the color is even more beautiful. not the typical stefan engström stuff, but nevertheless a fine work.

best wishes, Thilo

Nope, doesn't look fake to me.. it helps that the cloud in the right corner is lighter... like the sun is shining on it.
Very well handled as a composite!

LOL about the "about"...I feel the same, BTW.
Again, great mood captured.

Also lovely, Stefan! I like the slope of the mountain being echoed and mirrored by the curve in the bank, and all lines leading toward the unseen source of the light.

Beautiful image. Lovely how the mist is lighted. I also like the lines of the shore and hill. Well done. Can't wait to compare this image with the film image. Hope you'll put it up for us. -- Naomi

- great golden mist?full of mystery and a touch of the mystic! Very well realized photo and another winner Stefan. Fake, no fake? Don?t matter - looks real to me! It works or it doesn?t - always what counts is what the artist means to express ? is it esthetically pleasant? meaningful? strong? This is?
I keep looking ? I wonder ? would it be solid to add more sky space? Give more oxygen to them tree tops? Just my tendency anyway to square frame all? Beautiful as is!

Lovely title ;-)

Thanks Kim - good points and always very appreciated. Does the sky look fake (manipulated)?

Gorgeous atmosphere again, Stefan... that mist is stunning! I'm still on the fence about having the lighted mist in the centre of the frame... it splits the image in top & bottom, but I'm not sure how you could have otherwise framed this to give more power to either side but still keep the dynamics that are present now. I like how the shore falls away from the mist towards the bottom left and the mountains grow up from the mist to the top left... well seen!
