About I had been keeping my eyes out for newborn fawns in the wildlife refuge I go to. I knew that the does dropped their fawns in this area usually in the month of May. I was on my belly taking a picture of a box turtle in a boggy kind of area of very tall (2 meter) grass, when I realized how very soft and dry the last years foliage was. It was very comfortable laying there. I would have had no trouble sleeping in the very dry and cushoned old grass and I though to myself what a perfect birthing area this would be. After finishing with the turtle, I had walked only a few feet when I kicked up a doe maybe 10-20 meters ahead. Instead of running quickly away, she stopped, paused and looked directly back at me and I was sure she had a little one nearby. When I walked to where I first saw her, I found little twin fawns. There was bright red blood still on the dried grass. These little guys couldn't walk, so the birth had to have been maybe only minutes before I got there. I was very very nervous. I was only with them for maybe 5 minutes. They needed them mama and I was surely an intruder. It was an awesome and special time.

Great capture. This is a buck. You can tell by the markings on it's forehead. I captured a fawn a month or so ago, however mine wasn't this new. The one I saw chased my husband and son down the road. It's a great feeling to see and be able to photograph animals like this.

Thank you very much for your comments. I'm repeating myself, but even two months later, the power of that afternoon is clearly remembered. I don't know what will be able to top that afternoon as far as photography goes.

Thanks again,

Dave
