Hi Mark, Thanks for your reaction, and of course I'm willing to share a "secret or two"...:) In my about, there's already quite a bit of information on how this works, and the actual camera settings, but i'll try and explain the workflow a bit more indepth.
1. I loaded the scale with a few items (as dead weight, and a box of cigagrettes of approximately 150 grams.
2. I attached my flash (SB800) to the hot shoe of the camera. The SB800 has many flashh modes, one of them the ability to create repetitive flash bursts (a stroboscopic effect) The number of bursts can be set, in this case I used 3 bursts with a 8Hz interval between those bursts.
3. Set up the camera and tripod, and compose the frame.
4. I attached a wire exposure thingy to control the shutter.
5. I took off the box of cigarettes, and pressed the release button simultaneously.
6. The scale starts to rock back and forth, a few instances "frozen" by the three flash lights.

Hi Patrick,
The D2x is an amazing machine. I really love the quality and the things you can do with it. It does put a strain on the CF card and storage capacity, though, as the files will be huge. Metering, colours, contrast and such are just superb, though. It's definitely a very good camera....:) But beware, the camera also shows all artefacts and abberations of your lenses. I noticed that the image quality is strongly dependent on the quality of the lens, and before you know it, you'll be wanting the most expensive Nikkor lenses...:)

Hi Toshi, Clocks are very suitable for longer exposures, especially when the hands move with intervals. Blocking a few steps can be easliy done by temporarily putting the lens cap back on, and add that time later. Interesting thought, Thanks!

Hi AJ, Yeah, I would agree that equal spacing between the needles would've been even better, but might also make it a bit more static. I'll have a go at that too. It' would require a multiple exposure, though, as the fill flash / repetitive bursts are too rapid to exactly place the needle. Interesting thought, though, thanks!

Hi Petal, thanks for your indepth analysis. I had my doubts about the top left corner too, but decide not to do anything to it, as I didn't see a better alternative. Cloning it out would break the circle, which would be too obvious. Cropping it tighter is no solution either, I believe.

Love the clean image, and the different intensities of the red pointer giving a great sense of movement. The red frame really suits the image, and a great crop.
Perhaps you could do a similar one with larger scales and sell it to WeightWatchers for not so light weight constructions!

Hugo, this is a great idea. I like the little details like the punch of red color, and the diagonal compo of the three circles. I also like the way the circle on the outer case and its shadow intersect. Nice blur, its seems you have great control with it, allowing each step to be visible. Well done~

De originele compositie is inderdaad beter. De rand werkt inderdaad storend. De orginele is waarschijnlijk de beste compositie die je kan krijgen zonder de rand te tonen. Ik vind dat rood randje om je foto wel passend trouwens. Was me eerst nog niet opgevallen.

Excellent macro shot Hugo, reminds me of a similar shot (collage) I did a while back I did with clocks. I like the tilt you've used for this shot to give it that extra feel of motion as I think a straight on shot would be too static. I do understand your idea of adding a red frame but I think the red needle already adds the right amount of color - but that's just my personal taste and doesn't take away from the already great shot :)

Excellent 'motion' shot!!! I can almost hear it squeak when dropping that weight on it.... ;-D!!! Super clarity, DOF, excellent composition and crop.... well done I wouldn't change a thing.... ehmmmm maybe just a very little thing.... the top right hand corner... that tiny dark triangle (a piece of the rim that you rightly cropped off, way too 'flashy' and distracting)... a little clone action....???!!! Well now, these are the kind of shots that I also would like to take, but haven't got the equipment for.... ah well... when my 'ship comes in'.... ;-D!!! In the mean time I'll enjoy looking at great shots (like this one)!!!!
BTW Thanks for your comment and not DSM but azM (academisch ziekenhuis Maastricht)... LOL!!!

Well Hugo, it's about time (pun intended). Which pointer represents your weight? I like the whole project concept. The D2X produces a clean image. I just sold my D1X and lenses. I am going backwards to film and maybe Leica again and for the last time. This is a fun series to look at and quite a bit of work for you!

Hi Max, I'm impressed by your memory. I know which one you mean. I use an SB800 from Nikon, a very powerful tool. But you got me curious: What do you teach, presuming that's what the experiment is intended for? Physics? The experiment showing gravity by dropping one ball vertically and another one in a parabolic path?

Dank je voor je uitgebreide commentaar, erg prettig! Wat betreft de krappe compositie ben ik het wel met je eens. Heb het in een andere foto net iets ruimer genomen (iets verder af), maar hoewel ik de achtergrond wel had kunnen oplossen vind ik de metalen rand om de weegschaal wat storend. (zie attachment) Deze versie heb ik alleen aan de onderkant wat bijgesneden. Boven, links en rechts zijn volgens de compositie. De oorspronkelijke ruimere onderkant is ook bewust, omdat daar de tekst moet komen voor de brochure. Als je suggestisch hebt voor een alternatief, dan hoor ik het graag!

The thing with a watch or clock is, that a long exposure will be enough to capture each second, if the hand moves at (one second) intervals, and then stops for a (fraction of) a second. With these scales, which are continuous, that would result in a continuous blur, too. Just a long exposure wouldn't have been enough. (the needle bounces back and forth if a weight is removed or put on...

Hi Thilo, Thanks for your reply... If you notice carefully, I used a German ?2,- coin in the previous shot as well....:) Pure coincidence on that one, though. As a designer, I have a weakness for german design, especially in kitchen appliances. Braun's head of design, Herr Dieter Rams, came up with the "more is less" concept, which still plays an important role in german design... So theres' no coincidence here! Whatever the score of wednesday's match will be, that wouldn't change a thing:)

Hi Jeanette, Very interesting thought, that hasn't crossed my mind. A completely different interpretation, as this is a scale, with a changing weight...:) The intention was to express weight reduction in constructions by using the methaphore of the shifting needle of this kitchen scale. Think I like your explanation better, though, but It wouldn't be honest to make it so much more profound...:)

Hi Petros, Thanks for the feedback. I quite agree on the crop. I've made a second attempt which was taken a bit further away, but I didn't like the effect of the metal rim around the scales. (Per attached, could've used a different background, but it was the rim that made me decide that wasn't worth the effort) The original has a bit more space below, but I left the top, right and left side untouched.

Zeer mooie foto, Hugo!
Het idee om beweging vast te leggen in een foto levert vaak bijzondere resultaten op. Het concept is zeer goed uitgewerkt. Technisch gezien is de foto bijna perfect. Kleuren en details zijn schitterend. Enigste minpuntje vind ik de compositie. Ik vind hem net iets te krap. Dankzij de belichting is de shaduw van de wijzer heel mooi uitgevallen. Zeer knap hoe je dat gedaan hebt met die 3 flash bursts, was ik zelf niet opgekomen.
