I seem to have to be very close to anything to get the sharp focus I want. as soon as I can I will put on some I took tonight and wasnt happy with any of them. I think most were on program
200 iso. it was outside and for some reason I was able to get everything sharp except what I wanted.

One more thing I almost forgot: I've never been able to take shots of any quality using focal lengths of more than about 100mm without either a tripod, a monopod, or a VERY fast shutter speed.

I guess I should actually say "maximum aperture". Or at least that's the way I read it most often. Aperture (I misspelled it earlier)is a measurement of how wide the iris in your lens is open.

The LOWER the f/ value, the WIDER the iris is open. Having the iris wide open does a few things: First, it allows more light through the lens so you can take the shot at a faster shutter speed. (This may help reduce your problem with camera shake)

Second, it decreases your DEPTH OF FIELD. The objects behind or in front of your subject will be much blurrier than when shooting with a higher f/ value.

On the D70, you control the aperture with the front dial near your right index finger. Set your mode selector to Manual (M) or Aperture (A). Play with it some, it's pretty cool. Hope this helps.

what exactly do you mean by wide aperature. My problem with the long lense is movement I think. I am not sure but cant seem to get the sharpness.

You have a great eye for portraits. Have you tried using your new lens for it? A long lens and wide aperature greatly blurs your background, making for some pretty cool portraits.
