About This little falcon has been a thorn in my side for 2 years, It is around 8 inches long with maybe a wingspan of 10 inches, I have encountered and shot hundreds of them perched, but when they fly and they do fly fast they always seem to elude me as to a nice clear detailed shot I felt sharp enough to post. This weekend I had a fellow photographer take a long walk around the back of her after i spotted her in a tree. I conceled myself until she flew away from him and right by me I got off 10 or so shots still at some distance and this is the best of the bunch. For me It was worth
the wait, would have prefered the male of the species due to the more vibrant colors but the lucky shot that I sometimes get just was not going to happen for me with this one I will enclude the male that I have never caught in flight to show the color difference..

Terrific shot. We have a similar one that like to check out who's eating at our feeders some times. We know when he is around before we see him as all the little birds scatter. The blue jays do care as much. I see how fast he moves as know how terribly hard is was to get this picture. My hat is off to you for your inginuity and patience and this shot.

Marcus, you are really skilful with these shots. Most of us would just blunder, but you get 'em right every time!

Thanks Fabizio, That depends, sometimes none. typically since I shoot with no In camera sharpening, a 40,1.4,1 Is a good starting point, most pics I like to oversharpen a bit as I do love detail, and a few I like to leave soft. harsh or backlit subjects are tricky as they already have a natrual halo from the lighting so I have to be careful, this photo has almost zero sharpening..

Very beautiful capture Marcus, as always, the lighting is hitting her just where it should be, I always like to see the eye if possible, so this is perfect for me. I've seen these birds and they are very fast, so good for you capturing this one so beautifully. You composition is superb as always...it looks like she is carrying something....well done Marcus..:):)

Hi Marcus,
As you say these must be extremely hard to photograph. I think they are one of the fastest predators... and so much smaller than their cousins.
Great job! Good luck in the future with the male.

I think it's amazing that you can get these shots at all, much less so sharply detailed and perfectly posed. I think it's safe to say you have no equals when it comes to bird photography.

Marcus, Oh and she is beautiful as well. On one of my egret shots I had my son throwing shrimp at it. But he usually came to close for a clear shot. This is wonderful as always esp. that eye. Marilyn

HI Larry, I Think we all shot into blue skys with no problems, I do sometimes shoot into harshly lit subjects, usually from one side or the other but never in front of me, this one had the sun shinning on his right side or our left, therefore the shadows, these can be much darker shadows but I do open up the dark areas with the PS shadow and hightlight tool which will usually help very much with a half lit half shadowed bird assuming you start with a well detailed shot to start with, a soft or too dark of a shot and lightening will introduce severe noise, some things such as the white around the bird in the bright areas cannot be removed without a unnatural look. so even with the sun at our backs to one side or the other there can be some harshly lit bright areas and shadows..
Take Care..

Amazing capture Marcus, I can imagine how difficult it is to pan and keep up with these birds and snap off a clean shot. You have done an excellent job capturing it in flight. Great work.

Fabulous Marcus lovely colours detail and clarity. Den was after a heron when we were in Amsterdam, it was just across the water standing there. It didn't want to fly, we waved our arms and he just looked at us as though we were crazy people and 'stood there' LOL
