About The camera setting details are difficult to state as I used two pictures. The flower, I took outside in the summer and my grandaughter, I took inside in September.
Below, I have included another picture taken at the same time and turned to B&W. It is one my daughter and son-in-law want and I do like it. But, from what I understand, it is a rather well used pose, so I thought I'd try to do something a little different with it. I played in PS and came up with this. I hope you like it.

This is a beautifully thought out postwork composition utilising two great images. I also like the attached composition and whether it is a well used pose or not, one, I have never seen it other than here and two, another person's efforts can often surpass originals. Beautiful skin tones, excellent details and clarity and then there is the gorgeous floral study element. Well done to you Mary....excellent work indeed. All the very best to you.....Ray

Personally I love your black and white shot. The expression on the baby's face is precious. Although you are right about this pose having been used, you've still managed to make it your own.

I also like your photoart but I think that the baby looks like she is floating more than lying on the flower. Nevertheless, it is a great idea. :) Andree

Hi Antonia. Thanks so much for the comments and taking the time to offer suggestions. I really appreciate that. Re the bottom image: afer I got it printed on 4x6, I immediately noticed the background flaws and repainted. I need more practice with using masks. The marks did not show up on my monitor. HOWever, I just got a new one (and new computer and printer). Paul looked at me wierdly when I said it is wonderful as it shows my mistakes. The marks in this are now so very obvious on my new set up.
The top picture was me trying to do something different. Now, when I try something another time, I have some things to watch for. Thanks.

Very sweet! It can be a challenge to match lighting between pics. In this instance it looks decent, but the background blur is so pronounced that it draws a little attention away, rather than simply popping the focal point. The PS work on the transition is good. There are tell-tale lines in the background from cloning perhaps, which you can fix with the healing brush or clone tool. As for the bottom image, it is precious. Perhaps you can use a mask to make the black background more solid so that your brush strokes don't show. There is a halo along the baby's bottom and foot that is resting on the father's arm that needs to be cleaned up. I had that problem on my vampire and used a layer mask to refine my edge (the first and second takes are still up so you can see if you like). This image will be treasured for years to come Mary, and is well worth the effort. Don't worry about it having been done before -- who cares...it was never done with YOUR granddaughter! Congrats to you and your family on the beautiful newcomer. :) Hugs. Antonia

Oh Mary this is so very precious. I like the B&W posted here also but as you say it's been done before. This take with the baby on the flower is so creative and original. The flower photo on its own is wonderful and to put the baby on it very imaginative. I don't usually comment on people or baby photos as I enjoy photographing nature but your work is outstanding. I just love it.

Thank you also for taking the time to view and comment on my images. Your opinions are greatly appreciated.

Cheers - Ann :)

Imaginative use of compositing. Pretty time consuming and difficult to get just right. This pretty close as you can get with such different originals. Congrats on the grand-daughter.

Hi Alastair. Yes, I have PhotoShop 7. Thank you so very much for the help. Right now, there are no PS use classes near me that I can find. There are things I would like to do and don't yet know how. However, since I first got PS7 about 5 months ago, I've learned a lot from trial and error, reading through the Help pages and especially from notes like yours. I really appreciate your pointing out how to improve my images and sharing your experience so readily.

Alastair Bell   {K:29571} 10/5/2005
Hi Mary,

Assuming you use Photoshop (if you don't there are usually similar tools in other programs, normally what I would do is on the original image I would select the baby then feather the selection (the amount of feathering depends on the size of the selection so a bit of trial and error may be necessary - after a while you just sort of know - but try starting with say 10 pixels). Then when you add the baby to the new background the feathering will soften the image down a bit where the two overlap.

I've achieved a similar effect by using the blur tool and running it around the edge of the baby. I set the tool to normal more strength 39% then traced around the outside a couple of times till it sort of looked 'right'. I then went over the sharper details of the baby to try to make the overall sharpness look more natural. A quick bit of .2 pixel gaussian blur completed the blending.
As Roger mentioned the lack of shading under the baby is also a giveaway. So to fix this try using the paintbrush tool set to opacity 30%, flow 30%, set to soft light mode, then using black and a brush size of about 20 pixels with 0 hardness create shadows and darker areas under the baby. I've done a very quick and rough and ready job to show what I mean...
Hope you like it and find this helpful!

Alastair

Mary, I much prefer the B&W one of hanging out with Dad... The lack of any local shadowing on the petals under the baby's body sort of rubs in the fact that this is a composite. I like the idea, though, and the pose is perfect for it.

Very clever and unique idea Mary! I think a little softening of the edges of the baby would help a little to blend into the flower. There is a noticeable discrepancy in sharpness of the flower and sharpness of the baby which if adjusted will really hekp the overall image integrate.
I love the idea though!

Superb!!
