About A drop of milk dropped into a bowl of milk, with a little food colouring added.

Several hours spent experimenting in macro mode, getting very frustrated at the lack of sharpness in the drop and lack of DOF. Until I realised the problem was the macro mode. By backing off a bit and cancelling macro mode, everything suddenly became much sharper?

Narabia: I won't blame any graininess on Minolta, and I hardly touched the sharpness on this one, although you may have noticed from my comments on this and other similar images that I've been struggling with the sharpness. This could be noise due to the ISO 400 setting? Incidentally, I've viewed this on several different screens and the quality changes significantly with a better screen...

is is grainy because photos taken with minolta are grainy in general or because you sharpened it a bit too much?

Great shot, John. I love the "mouth" pattern you ended up with. Looks like someone with their tongue in a twist. Cheers, Ann.

Very cool AJ! What a creative experiment my Friend!
I know the feeling of being frustrated!Sometimes I'll take 100 shots and not like the results of ANY! Other times a quick snap turns out well! Go figure!!!

Great shot John,

One thing that I did for focusing problems was to tie a piece of thread at the end of the fixed container that I was using to make the drips, let the liquid flow all the way down the thread and focus at that point. Another method was to place a pencil across the glass and place it in the path of the drip and focus on the lettering on the pencil. Which ever method you may use, it's a great joy to come out with a stunning image such as this one. Great idea using the food colors with the milk.

Antonio - exactly my thinking, but as you suggest, I would have thought 1/2000th should really be fast enough!

obviously ISO is not directly linked to the sharpness but it allow to use shutter speed suitable to freeze all the scene; it can be reached in same way by incresaing light with lamps

I must admit I was thinking of things other than mouth ulcers, and really had to think hard to come up with something I could type!

Hi Sally! Some of the other shots look far more suggestive than mouth ulcers... I put a drop of food colouring in the milk first, then dropped milk drops onto the colouring. The first drops pushed the colouring out as in this shot. Later ones have the colouring rather more splattered about!

Hi Antonio! Thanks for your comment. I was really struggling with the sharpness here. But by this shot I was focussing manually on a metal ruler and checking the DOF across the whole area of interest before taking the shot. And I pushed the ISO up to 400. Not sure what is left to try except to push the ISO further?

Looks like a mouth ulcer!
Was the drop the food colouring? How did you get just the edges to be red?
Very inventive!

Antonio Trincone   {K:23167} 10/23/2005
sharp but not enough in my opinion and I wonder how with 1/2000 such unsharpness is reached; may be it is a focus problem instead
