About This is an image that I took in 1971 of a great old guy named Antoinne. He used to be the caretaker of the factory where I did my apprenticeship. He would come around every day and talk to everyone in the shop. When he got to another person to talk to, he would roll another cigarette. He couldn't tell us how old he was, because he didn't know. He was not slow witted and he was a great story teller. His father was a Native North American Iroquois and his mother was French Canadian. He used to tell us stories of fishing Lake Superior with his father and uncles when he was about 10 years old. He claimed this was in the late 1890's. So that would have made him around 80 when this photo was taken.

Thanks Thilo,
As I said before, I've been digging up a lot of old negatives. Quite a lot, I've never printed. It's like going through a treasure chest. Even if I get one in twenty four that is worth posting, I will never have to take another shot again. :)

Thanks Endre,
He is a blast from the past! I've been scanning some older negatives, so more will be coming from the early 70's to the late 80's.

Hi Susie,
Photos tend to do that for people! :)
You sometimes leave them alone for years and come back later for some nice memories.

Hi Darlene,
Maybe we could get your Mom fixed up with Antoinne! It might not work out though, The 15 year age difference might be too stressful. He would be about 105 now.

What a character. I love to think back on people like this that I've known in my life. This photo reminds me of some of them. Nice one Andre.

Yes there are......my Mother is one of them! She's 90, thinks she's 40! She's still very opinionated and lets everyone know what she thinks! But her spunk has contributed to her long life I think, she had a pacemaker put in a couple of months ago and told me that she was really worried about the battery in it, she said she read the papers and the batteries only last 20 year!!! I told her not to worry, I'd get her new batteries when she's 110 (if I'm still here!) Darlene

Thanks Ina,
I feel that more people should take advantage of the "about" section. I'm the same as you, I always enjoy the little stories people write about their subjects as well as the technical aspects. I know images should stand on their own and they are worth a thousand words and all that crap, but a little story doesn't hurt for some extra human intrest. :)

Amazing story, very beautiful, and wonderful character portrait! It really makes a picture come alive when you know a bit about the subject and the story. Wonderful work, Andre!

Hi Darlene,
Yes, This guy had a tough working-man's life, but he mostly always had a smile on his face. I'll bet there are a lot of characters very similar to him down there in Louisianna!

Hi Ray,
You might get this reply twice, I may have sent it to Rosario instead of you. But I' not sure.

Thanks Ray,
I love going back through my old stuff and re-doing them in PS. I love my old work as much as the new stuff and I'm glad I didn't throw any of it away.
This guy was a great old character who was very photogenic. He really liked the camera. He really is a little bit of Canadian History as well as a "Salt of the Earth" working man. After fishing for a good part of his life, he worked in construction for years, until he got too old. Then he was taken on as a caretaker in a factory.
One of the most impressive things about him was the size and roughness of his hands. Unfortunately, I don't think I have any shots that show his hands well.

Thanks Mervo,
I'm glad you enjoyed this image. There may be a couple more to come.
As I remember, Antoinne couldn't read or write and had no birth certificate. He was like someone that stepped out of another century to us all in the shop. He did command respect and no one made fun of him or condesended him.

Thanks Judi,
This comes from a little shoot that I did of Antoinne back quite a few years ago now. (1971) For some reason or another, I never did print them. They scan up pretty well, so I might do a couple more.
This guy was a real character. He was amusing, but at the same time, people never made fun of him or condesended him. He never learned to read or write and didn't have any records of age or birth. We could only take his stories at face value. Everyone believed him because he was such a great story teller.

And thanks for visiting BTW.
Antoinne was a real character. He lived his life in a different era.

I really appreciate photographs like this, the story behind what encouraged you to take it was interesting!

The man has so much charactor about him and it's not often that people don't know their age!

Thanks for sharing this one with us, made me smile a lot, and I hope one day I can look back at old photographs and get lost in some nice memories!
