Thanks lex,
I shoot from the water with a flexible housing to protect my gear, lets me get the angles that, as you observed you cant get shooting from the beach.

Great colours, nice photo. From where did you film the action? Where you in the water on a surfboard to? Becose that would be a risk for you're camera. But on the other side, you could not do it from the beach or am i wrong??

hey guys thanks for the positive feedback, yeah sean i thought of that but i havent tried it yet, whats holding me back is that fact that 95% of these waves are closeouts and im continually about to get smacked in the head when i shoot up close in the water. ill definately give it a go though.

not a bad crop at all but i see the autofocus caught you this time around. next time, turn the autofocus off and set the focus ring on the lens to just below infinity. make sure you're within a few feet of the surfer when you take the shot and they'll always be in focus.

nice sam. you might want to try and straighten out the camera angle a bit. good job on getting him as he's looking right at the camera and not blowing out the white water. keep 'em coming.

Nothing odd about that crop,it works a treat. The softness suggests you may have cropped quite deep but resulting composition and the capture of the moment make up for that.
Nice job, Sam.

Nice shot, good colours & the surfer is looking right at the camera which looks cool - looks like this break would be a fun takeoff.

I think the camera angle flattens the wave a bit which is the same but it is about a thousand times better than the average water shot I've taken.

Keep them coming - you havent posted in ages

perhaps a crop off the botton and right side would help him to fit the 3rds rule...but...maybe not....looks great! Outstanding!

cheers for the encouragement kam, and im glad you're enjoying the pics grant. Yes ive contemplated a wideangle lens but i really want shots that involve the viewer and take them close to the action and the 50mm get me in a bit closer n makes it a little more personal.
sean, yeah i know i didnt really want to post this one as to me its pretty badly out of focus but i thought bugger it some people might still like to see it. I hope im wrong but if your suggesting to use manual focus in the water that pretty impossible. ill just have to concentrate a bit more on the tracking next shoot. As for "metering setting" lol i just don;t know what that is.

sam, not bad. nice to see you using a 50 in the water. everyone is after the super wide angle look these days and to me it's over used. a 24 is about as wide as i get. your focus is off just a tad since the bodyboarder is a bit soft but the lip in the background is pretty sharp. i'm guessing you're using the AF on your camera. the movement of water can confuse the AF into focusing on the wrong part of the image. do you see where i'm going? the whitewater above his head is a little blown out. what metering setting are you using?

keep shooting. let's see some more.

Hi Sam

Keep the surf photos coming - I'm too far from the sea for my liking so I love some surf pics on this site.

As for advice on the photos, maybe work on the timing of the shot for when the lip is throwing over his head, of a surfer throwing spray on a turn. A wide angle lense would make this wave seem about 10ft & could make for some interesting shots. Subscribe to www.aquabumps.com - a Sydney surf report for some great surf/beach shots for ideas.

If your interested I have a shot from Costa Rica in my pics of good break.

there are a few other tricks to shooting from the water but before i say anything i'll see what else you come up with. don't worry about the dof with f/4, you'll be just fine. you want to be within a few feet of the surfer anyway.

kim, some water housings do accomodate a flash and there are certain situations where it would be useful. however, i've found that a flash in the water gives a real hard edge to the photo but there are lots of water photogs who are working with flash now. i've seen some pretty cool shots where they tag teamed, one swam with the camera and the other swam with a slave unit.

thanks for the comments everyone,
Sean - yeah mate i shoot exclusively from the water (much more of a challenge and incredibly fun) and thanks for the apeture tip ill keep it around f4 i just wanted to get a nice DOF in the shot.
Kim - sadly my funds restrict me to using a heavy duty plastic bag as my water housing and it does not accomodate a flash, but im really not worried, i like to keep my photos as natural as possible. I shoot not from a boat, but by swimming and treading water in the surf, and as for the cropping i didnt crop any of the photo just the black bits of the film holder that i accidentally scanned.

Would there be any chance of getting some flash on his face to lighten it up a bit? With a 50mm lens I'm guessing you were in a boat close by? (or was the teensy bit o'
cropping really a huge chunk?) Everything else looks pretty good... just would like some detail on his face to see his expression.

sam, not bad. gotta love that water color down by you. makes me jealous. i take it you're a water shooter? i would recommend having your aperture just a tad wider. i don't usually shoot any smaller than 5.6. you want that shutter speed in the 500 - 1000 range. i would also recommend trying velvia 100f for film. i think you'll be extremely happy with it. looking forward to seeing some more work from you.
