Hi Brent,
the cropped photos is perfect! People have said that it deserves awards in the comments I've read on it. Well... why not!! For a start, there's a few magazines in Japan for foreign folks. I think one of them (Metropolis or Japanzine??) does a photo of the week each week. Maybe for a start you should send this photo to them. It certainly has enough character to merit publication. As I said already though, keep up the good work.

I don't think I've ever seen a station "looking" so empty in Tokyo before! It's an excellent photo (and I'm guessing it was taken off-the-cuff?). I wonder how cropping the photo to focus only on the mother and child as the train zips by would be? I say this only because I didn't like the small bit of piller that could be seen to the left foreground of the image. Anyway, I cropped the image a lot and posted it for you to consider. With the mom and child only and the small amount of kanji in the train window, it makes the location a little more obscure (is it China, Japan??)

I think on the flyby's (spelling??) the pilot had a lower limit of 500 ft so yeah they were pretty close, and really huge planes too!!

Hi Bren,
I've been off the scene a while but had to comment on this photo. It's great!! Shallow depth of field, nice balance to the tones and a subject who clearly didn't want to be where he was at that moment (poor fella!. My czech friend here beside me thinks it would have been better if you hadn't half-cropped out the head of the lady in the background but I think that she was incidental to the subject of the shot and remain convinced it's a good 'un!!

yeah they are difficult to capture alright. They move so fast! I was lucky to get the shots and will post some more "with" the coloured smoke trails. My photos are fine for my abilities but you should have seen the photo on the front page of yesterday's irish times: those pro photorgraphers really have all the angles covered! (check out www.ireland.com as the website may still have the photo on it)
Anyway, thanks again for the compliment and good luck with the photography.

Hi Bren,
this is eye-catching as a thumbnail and way, way better enlarged!! As has been posted, it's surral with intriguing colours! I am impressed at the sharpness in the foreground falling away to a dark and threatening sky in the background. To be honest, the photo reminds me a bit of Connemara or Ivereagh Penninsula back in Ireland, especially with the hills off in the background. Nice!!!

this is really very good. It's a development on your first posting of the tea cup and I like that you've cropped off the black edges from the contact print. I really hope that you are selling your photos and making money from the hobby: you ought to be!

Hi Bren,
this is a great "portrait" or reed grass - lack of depth of field, great contrasting colours in the background etc. I just wonder if you have another image like this with the tip of the reed grass not cut off the top?? It doesn't matter anyway as this is a fantastic pic.

Hi Matej,
the first interpretation is the correct one. She was great but she was dancing as she was playing and only momentarily came to the camera so I had to shoot without attention being paid to the composition really. If I had the chance though, I would photograph this girl again and be more considerate toward the image I would try to get. Honestly, this lady was really beautiful in person with a fabulous smile.

Hi Matej,
Limerick has a reputation in Ireland which I won't really go into, so they might thank me for trying to urge people to visit the area!!! (wait they might charge me for photographing their city so I'll say nothing!)
AS for the photo, yes it was a really bright day with very strong, harsh light at the time I took the photo. Maybe a gloomy day might be better for the photo so I'll consider it for future attempts:- the building's not going anywhere soon!!
As for B&W from colour I've only recently discovered the "Channel mixer" and have yet to use it, but will definitely try it out, so thanks for the suggestion there.
If you want good control when converting colour to bw in Photoshop, then the Channel Mixer is probably the best tool.
And finally the composition would have been improved if I had noticed the things you noticed, - especially the window on the upper right corner!

Hi Bren,
just back from the local (it's on campus about a minute from the lab I work in!) and I must say the balancing you've done is a more honest reflection of the day it was! The sky was as impressive as you're adjustment makes it look. You're impression of my impression is the way it looked on the day!!
I'm not too familiar with the things that can be done in photoshop so maybe you could let me know what you did exactly sometime. From the (drunken) looks of things you isolated the sky and deepened the colour a bit. Am I right??
I must sign off now as I definitely had a pint on your behalf and typing is diffffffficult after a few!!

Hi again Bren,
god I'd better get off the internet as I'm meant to be finishing an experiment in my lab before doing the sociable and having a Guinness supper!
Anyway, back to the central issue: the photo. I got the negatives scanned for this roll of film and was really disappointed with them. Every shot seems grainy on the computer. As for the blues, I'm not sure I get you, but would like to clarify that I used a polariser on the lens (most of the time I have one on actually). I also adjusted the levels of the photo with photoshop as the scanned negative seemed incredibly harsh with the lighting.
Finally: YES over and over and over and over and over again. I've yet though to capture the photo at sunset as I'm usually working around that time, my lab is on the other side of the city! Someday though, someday!!

Phil, I've got two of them but I didn't want to be lugging one around the pubs of Limerick after the fireworks had ended! I suppose though I could have used it as a crutch to hold myself up with after a few beers! (terrible joke, sorry!)
