About While driving south on hwy101 this kid was on the sidewalk waving to everyone. He was very freindly and for this town a bit different... I pulled around the corner and we struck up a 'hair' conversation... It was very interesting . He was a very nice young man and told me how he achieved this style as well as let me take several pictures...
What do You think ?

Hi Michele,

I read all the interesting reactions, specially those of Terry and Doyle. I think the 3 of you put up a pretty interesting learning process here.

To the image:

Sharp, but to much centered (nothing new, as I read already), The "figure" is very interesting. The background is distracting to much. So, another background or heavily DOF.

But I know how difficult this is with "street-photography", searching interesting subject, that is moving, if being "candid-away" (with alle riscs of sharpness loss etc).

To the process:

I am now working on portraits and street for the first time and must admit, difficult but interesting jobs.

The goal is not (always) the most important, but (also) the travelling...

I, personally like learning, experimenting and discovering new things. The perfect result in the view of general opinion is not my (first) aim.

Because, I simply want maximum satisfaction and not mainly frustration.

Ending:

Maybe, the comment seems sometimes a bit far from your image, but it's in this case more pointed on the process than on the result.

With such a model, one should have days, weeks to experiment and try. Unfortunatly reality is different.

So we simply have to accept that and take our chance on every oppertunity, for maximum satisfaction on photographing...

Wish you, Terry and Doyle, all the best and goog oppertunities,

Greetz,
Albert

Ahh come on now ... It could give you an entirely new persona and view of life . Think of how people would look at You and treat you ...much differently I am sure. Just in reading the comments I recieved ( if you did) It seemed to create strong emotions in some . ..and the women who would be attractd to You ...there you go now ...
An entirely new world to explore ..ha!

Mostly just kidding with you JD... Thank You for your honest comment and I value it.

Best Wishes,
Michele~

I don't think this hairstyle would enhance my looks....PASS.
Good subject matter. It pays to diversify, I think, to help create interest in more mundane subjects. For what it's worth...
Kind regards,
JD

Thank You for your time and comment Annemette,
I always appreciate your POV.

I don't think this is his style at all Annemette. I think he has zero self esteem and is an extremely lost individual. Just read Michele's remarks about him. I wouldn't want to be in his "space".

Great hair! I´m pleased to see that some teenagers still have the courage to go for their own style although maybe living in a small town where nobody understands what you´re doing!
Thanks for the info, Michele!

Thanks Terry,

Now just one more more very important thing.... Doyle is a very kind + generous friend with a very kind, generous + talented wife .
I am a single female, and live in Or.
We live in different states.... and as sweet as his wife is... I know I wouldn't want my husband to be in the same message with another female on more than maybe one complicated situation.... IF THAT ....

I understand how things may have appeared, but this is really how they are. I am hoping you can understand this much better now ?

It's just me, Michele Carlsen alone right now !

We really have a soap opera going on over this topic !! LOL !

Your Friend,
Michele~

Hi Michele and Doyle. Well sometimes I don't have time to get indepth regarding what I'm thinking about a Photograph.

But I'm there and I want to let the Photographer know that I've stopped in for a look. Of course you can consider me a friend. :)

Terry :

Point taken and made very well. While your initial comment does give valuable feedback to the photographer . . . leaving it there neglected some more helpful critique that was warranted and may have caused the mis-impression that everything technical was just fine. Like you said so clearly . . . we agree, so you're probably right!!

Im off to SF in a bit . . . gettin' ready . . . Peace!

Hi Terry,

You make an interesting and valid point. I think I was just hoping for more of a response than 'get a haircut + a job' and I thank you very much for the great critique You ended up giving me.

I lucked out that You are open minded and not at all what my first reaction was when recieveing this response. BTW I got another 'creepy looking' response..

Doyle will no doubt speak for himself but he did say already he had a son that went thru a phase like that. I also had a long talk with the kid.

He was sick, and on lithium, and a mood stabilizer... and he was shaking... ( un-controlably)

I know he felt some kind of shame...because he wanted to tell me why he wore his hair this way, and what he was trying to say and do in his own personal style.

Because of his situation , which I choose to beleive.... I felt protective of him in a motherly kind of way I suppose.

I know I could be totally fooled and he could blow up LC today ... but I went with my gut.
I hate to think people judge me because of my looks and they do, we all do it just like You said.
It just doesn't make it right.

I thank You for following this thru and speaking your mind. It has been interesting to put it mildly !

Best Wishes Terry, I am glad I got to sort of meet You and I'd like to call you friend?

Michele~

Oh... and again Michele, try not putting him dead centre. The subject dead centre almost never works. There are glaring exceptions, but they're very few and far between. Try offset the subject. Even if it's only a bit.

"Thank You very much Terry I do appreciate these comments very much and I do have 3 other shots that have several of your suggestions in them...

One you might really like cause his nail polish desn't match either and he's smoking ( I think) Or showing off his nails ?

I will send you one and take your ideas into action...> that's why I am here !

I do appreciate your time. I know his look screams badass but he is sick, and young, just out of HS... he could have been lying to me, but he wasn't bad. He was confused I think...

Thank You very much Terry,
Best wishes,
Michele~"

Thanks Michele. Well I'm definitely not an expert, but you asked, so I have to respond. (Either that or risk being impolite.)

I like this Pic better. But I have a horrible aversion to cars and background people (noise) who/shich aren't meant to be in the shot for artistic reasons. The more simple the shot, the better. But again, that's just my personal taste.

This shot of him without the vehicles would be much nicer.

Hi Michele and Doyle,

Michele: I'm glad this Thread turned out the way you'd hoped. :)

Doyle: Some very good points. People who agree with me are usually right. LOL! At least that's been my experience. ;)

Your Post is right on. I just disagree with the first sentence, and nothing else.

"And you're quite right to request a critique of your photo instead of your model."

The model is an integral part of the Photograph. He/she is usually the subject. The Photographer chooses the subject. Every picture has an initial reaction. A feel.

Comments like, "Wow! What a beautiful Model.", or "My God, what a Freak." are valid critiques for a Photo. In fact, I think the initial reactions are the most important. I enjoy reading comments like that to my Pics, because it means I'm doing my job.

I know many members on usefilm feel insulted when people talk about their subject and not their Photography skills, but the subject is the first choice that a Photographer actually makes. It's maybe one of the most important.

Michele, you were obviously looking to say something by choosing this Guy as your focus. Just be careful hiding behind garbage cans taking pictures of people. You never know who you're going to meet. :)

Thanks to both of you for an interesting Thread and an interesting read. :)

Great capture and follow-up comments Michele, good light and skin tones ... I agree a low pov would have been more effective, but then you do have it under street photography so it fits the project :) ... and good on you for being brave enough to strike up a conversation!

On our way tomorrow!! No major mishaps on your shot either . . . major potential for learning for others and suggestions for improving. That doesn't mean your shot is no good if it can be better . . . most of my shots need improvement too - but they're still not necessarily bad. :)

Thank You Doyle ... I have made some major mis-haps here, BUT I did take a few of other shots too... I just didn't feel they came out as good... and I guess I wanted a reaction.

Hey aren't you on your way to SF ??

I sent Terry the one with the dark nail polish, and I will send you the one where he doesn't see me hiding behind the trash can ...( at first I did sneak up on him) Altho it was just so he wouldn't pose..

Thank you for the compliment of going up to him... I am not shy , not always soo smart in this way , but always felt I could be just as spooky as the next person ...Bwaaaa!
My impression is now ruined I suppose :(

Thank You for your time and always appreciate Your critiques Doyle ... They are helping me , ( bum example here) BUT in general they are a giant help !!!!

Have Fun,
Michele~

I think he needs a haircut and a job! BWA HAHAHAHAA! Sounded like my Dad. And you're quite right to request a critique of your photo instead of your model.

Here's mine: This shot is of a unique model, but by no means the strangest. One of my boys went through the "Gothic" phase . . . pale skin and black dyed hair, etc. Not for me but people are individuals and I have found most of these types of people are really very nice. Apparently your model was very cooperative for you as well. Since he was, I would caution you to be more aware of your BG next time an opportunity arises. The brown framing on the building behind him looks distracting in that it appears to come out of his head and (behind him) connects his hair to his jacket (which, incidently, advertises drug abuse by hallucinogenic mushrooms :) ). The white window framing seems even more distracting as it geometrically connects his lips to his hairline. Two ways to fight that really . . . and don't feel bad, it happens all the time . . . even to pros. ( I saw a model shoot in which the paid model spent the day and later the shots (from a forest scene) almost all made the branches look like she had antlers!! )
The first way is to narrow the DOF and blur the BG . . . and that's really the best way. The second is to arrange the shot so that the BG isn't an issue. Dramatic impact would have been significantly increased, for example, had you taken a lower POV and used a sky BG . . . it may also have added an aura of height and mystery as well as accentuating the uniqueness of your model. Maybe just a slight tilt would have solved it.

I would also like to mention that at least one eye should be seen in portraits (IMO) and that's not a rule I know of but a serious preference. The eye is the window to the soul and that door gives us real depth to portraits. A quarter turn would give us face and hair and - potentially - the eye or eyes as well. With the black eye makeup, the eye would have stood out dramatically.

In closing . . . WOW! Great job to actually go up to this guy and ask! I really like that kind of gritty determination and it suggests a lot to me. Impressive Michele . . . very impressive!
:)

Regards,
Doyle I <~~~~~

Hi Michelle,

Hehe! Well he's not very photogenic. And he should be shot by the fashion police for wearing those earrings with that jacket. ;)

But reagrding the photograph, it's a good street shot, and Canon's are great cameras, but if you're asking me, (and you are), I would have to say that I'd change three things about this Pic.

Firstly, since he's the subject, I wouldn't have his face dead centre in the shot. For the same reason, I'd change the background to something that doesn't distract so much from him. Maybe get him from a lower angle with his head against the blue sky.

Thirdly, since it has a street shot feel, I'd try to catch him in a candid photo that looks unposed. Maybe with a scowl or a frown on his face.

His look screams badass, but he's smiling for the camera. But that's just my tastes.

I hope you enjoy reading these thoughts better than my first post.

Have a great day, and keep posting Pics Michele. :)

Thank You Jan ! I don't think he wears his hair like this for sure ... he told me it had soap foam, hairspray , and several hair products, that would give him a terrible headache if he wore it this way in rainey / windy weather !!!
