About Stitched by: Michael Kanemoto

I like to create large panoramics by stitching multiple images together. This is a continuation of a photographic collaboration on usefilm between myself, Tom Rumland, and Hugo de Wolf.

This is a cactus that was growing at the end of an inlet on an island in Baja. The stitching was difficult but Tom and Hugo both rose to the challenge. I can only hope that they have a new appreciation for stitching and working on large formats.

The experiment is to determine the different visions and resulting treatments of 3 different people acting on the same image.

All three of us will posting three versions of one of our images. the same image re-worked by each of us. This is the second of these images.

MK: http://www.usefilm.com/image/779950.html
HdW: http://www.usefilm.com/image/779951.html
TR: http://www.usefilm.com/image/779952.html

The first collaboration is at:
MK: http://www.usefilm.com/image/657485.html
HdW: http://www.usefilm.com/image/657483.html
TR: http://www.usefilm.com/image/657482.html

We are interested in your views regarding the different treatments. likes, dislikes, etc. preferably within the context of the re-work and noted individually under each version. The subject was chosen between all of us.

Hope you enjoy it!

I have looked at all three and I have to say that I love this one. The colors are fantastic. Just a beautiful image all around. I also love that you collarborated with 2 other photographers from UF.

Love the work here - the detailed About makes it even more spectacular. The color you've captured is unreal - I feel like I'm watching it on HDTV. The lens bend is excellent - I'm glad you didn't crop it out to make it work. I love the light being caught just at the tip of the cactus - excellent timing.
BUT the think that makes this an absolutely EXCELLENT shot is the collaboration between 3 people (some of Usefilm's finest I might ad) to do it. What an awsome project and idea!

On a side note:
I have used a stitching program called PixMaker and loved the results (you can pick the format-len that you used for it's determining what you want and you can do a 360 on it).

I like this one best! The stitches are performed well in all three version, but this one stands out because of the vivid colours.

I proclaim this one to be the winner. The curves and colors are magnificent! Everything is very significant. Great job!

I like the 3 of them but this one is my favorite, the colors and contrasts give the image great depth, also I think the way the framing is curved gives a great wide angle perspective especially that the subjects are close.

your version has the best color and tones IMHO. Its my favorite. I don't mind the black borders, it actually makes the image more interesting.

mk, sorry, i didn't mean to imply there was a contest. just a figure of speech since, in my opinion, this is the best of the 3. credit where credit is due.

as to the available tools, my problem is not that ptmac isn't good enough. it's simply that i haven't quite gotten up to speed with a tool that is very complex (i understand that it is more complex/flexible than the windows version). probably from lack of practice. i plan on fixing that next week ;^)

take care,
tom

This one had the best qualities out of all of them. Better color and saturation, more crisp. Cool idea. It's a very good job the stitch is invisible.

Regards,
megan

If you view this picture, remember to look at the other two versions created by Tom Rumland and Hugo de Wolf:

http://www.usefilm.com/image/779951.html
http://www.usefilm.com/image/779952.html

Each artist worked in isolation and did not see the other's work until today.

Tom:

Did not realize it was a contest. I think in this case the tools for the PC are unfortunately better than the Mac tools - 90% of the benefit is that Arcsoft package which gives an easy clean stitch. I have to thank Jeff Cartwright for the help when I was searching for something to use.

Getting a clean frame on a spline is also easier if you have Adobe Illustrator and have used it for a while.

The rest of it is pretty much PS masking work with a massive brush.

mk, this is definitely the winner. i am very impressed. it seems to be a simple task but i got my a%& handed to me on this one. incredible how you managed to use all the frames. not only are you ps-guy, you are now also known as panoman ;^) excellent job!

take care,
tom
