Tom:
Metering: All manual guesswork I'm afraid. The IR filter I use has about a 13 stop change, so I'm going to be shooting a long exposure no matter how bright it is. I use the exposure graph on the camera to see if I've got it right.
More F-stop though would make for a crisper image.
If I was a real photographer I would have stuck around, but as a vacation photographer the object is to see the waterfall, set up quickly, take the shot given the situation, and move on.
We like to really see a lot of stuff in one week. Here is the itenerary for the day I took this shot.

michael, well done! i echo most of the comments above. a very nice composition and an great choice for IR. i really dig the "speeding" clouds, btw. this must've been a really long exposure, no?
the devil's advocate in me has ideas of his own tho ;^) i wonder if this could be improved by shooting it at a time when there are less shadows in the frame. i'm thinking that the dynamic range of the image in combination with the IR filter is really putting your meter to the test. it's done a great job, mind you, but i think a more even tonal distribution could've been achieved with more even lighting.
i'm not sure that it would be any better. but the physics suggest that with less shadow in the frame, thereby being able to use a slightly faster shutter speed, you might have been able to achieve some more subtle tonal ranges from the different types of trees and other surfaces. what do you think?
take care, tom

Whoo hoo! Welcome to the wild world of IR! This is a great image... the textured patterns of the trees with the milky motion of the waterfalls is very cool!
I shoot all of my IR with my Sony 717, mainly because I don't need a slow exposure to get a sharp IR photo (due to the Nightshot mode). I like to get handheld/candid IR shots from multiple angles without lugging around a tripod -- especially when I'm traveling light. Now, there are times when I'd like to use a slow exposure on water features with IR, so it looks like I'll have to buy an IR filter for my D70 now!
And yes, IR is great when the light is harsh in the middle of the day... I also like evening shots too -- darkens up a clear blue sky even more for a more contrasty image.
I look forward to seeing more!

Thanks Howard.
I figured that IR looks best when color looks it's worst - bright sunlight. Also I thought it would help that the filter is -13 stops - enough to veil the waterfall. This is my first time trying out the filter and this one turned out really well.

Hi Michael, It has been a very long time... Been awfully busy, and I'm only here for a few days... This whole IR filter concept is becoming increasingly intriguing; I have seen some shots by Tom, which already looked spectacular, but this one is also pretty impressive. What I like most, is that such a theme is immediately recognisable, but it takes a bit more time to figure out each individual element. Can't really comment on the technical merits here, as I wouldn't know what to say. I do find it fascinating, though. Good to see more of your work, too! Hope you are fine!
Cheers,
Hugo

Thanks. I think I saw your evil twin at Taos, NM. He had a Canon. Looked like your image, but was hard to tell.
