What sometimes works is to take 2 photos at different exposures (use auto-bracketing if you have it), then combine them in photoshop using layers - the darker one, you select the sky and the brighter one, the land. Its difficult to do this for a snapshot, but if you have the time, it works quite well (like an ND grad)...
yeah, I am in dire need of a polarizing filter, but on this lens there are no threads for one. I can either expose for the sky or expose for the actual subject.
