About I bought a Bogen Manfrotto tripod and head today and I've been waiting to try some still-life work. This is my first real attempt at a still-life composition. I took a great many pictures of a variety of object arrangements. This was my favorite.

I am new to this, please help me understand how I could have done this work better or suggest other things I might have tried. I would like to learn this art, thanks for your help!

Margaret, thanks for your words and insights. The idea of photographic still life seems a little strange at first, since still life is something I have almost always seen done with paint. But I have long admired still life paintings and so I wanted to achieve a painterly look in a photographic still life. I will continue to work in that direction. Nonetheless I am also eager to see what else I can do with photographic still life, in addition to the painterly look. Thanks again!

What a great start to still life shots. The colours and textures being slightly muted make it look quite oldy worldy - in fact like a fine painting :) The detail and dof are both good. I have spells of trying odd things, some work, some don't and I guess with you artistic eye you are going to produce more and more excellent compositions

Hi Mark, I like this image just fine. Beautifully composed with color. As for any other advice; trust your instincts, your bio says you're an artist already. Create what You think is beautiful you can't go wrong. Thanks for sharing!

Congratulations Mark, image is excellent( I also use Manfrotto tripod) It is sharp, color is appropriate for the subject...very pleasant.

I would make other pictures isolating the pieces
and experimenting new compositions.

Have a nice day...sunday!
