Howdy Jim,

Thanks for taking the time to make my shot look better! I learned a great deal from this image.. first of all, sRGB for websites ;) The image posted looks *nothing* the one printed on my wall! I do like your composition.. it has that abstract flare that holds the negative space better.

thanks again for the comments!

cheers,
-Joel

i think the color cast takes away from this image. the orientation in the frame could be improved by putting it in a third.
I made some adjustments to show you what I mean.

Thank you very much Jocelyne!

So glad that someone likes these crazy macros! I'm an addict. I'm picking up a lensbaby lens this weekend...and i'll be taking to another level...i hope.

I enjoy your water on the sunroof image every day it pops up on the home page!

best,
-Joel

Joel, this is an awesome still life. There is so much detail in the textures of the lemon and the lighting is perfect. It adds to the "oldness" of the lemon. Congrats on getting FPD and thank you for your comments on my work. I truly enjoy seeing your style through your macros and through your use of lighting. THanks for sharing. )

Thank you Petal!

..funny how this image is a dividing line with some people. It's either the gritty that people like, and hate the soft shadow, or they shadow they love, and hate the gritty! ...wow... I could start a photographic civil war with this simple picture of a tired old lemon. ;)

Thanks again John for your very kind comments!

It's my pleasure to share what I've learned from being driven by other people's work here on usefilm! This place is a great school for all of use!

Good luck with your light painting! Looking forward to seeing what you capture! ...a cool trick, is to diffuse the maglight's lens with tape for the first 10 seconds ;)

best,
-joel

Joel,

Well, your paiting with light has inspired me to work harder. I will try this technique later this week and post over the weekend.

After viewing this image again it really does come across as a realistic painting, lovely.

Regards,
John

Thank you very much john!

The lemon is lit with only a 2-AA Maglight. no other lights were on in the room, and the maglight was moved quickly in circles directly above the lemon. So, that way the harsh shadows stayed at the top of the lemon, and soft at the table...you can almost see the path of the maglight on the table!

Thanks again for your comments!

best,
-Joel

Joel,

Very well lit, I love the grittyness of this shot.

How did you get the dappled light?

Regards,
John

Mouthwatering.... ;-D I find the lighting 'spot on' but a nice clean/sharp shadow to go along with that would be the icing on this lemon cake... (ah shoot here I go again... ;-D)!! Great tones, textures and details... excellent composition... well done!!

Mark,

Thank you very much for your comments. I agree, still life is an old art that to some, don't involve a world of detail that you would get from a candid photo of a couple walking down a dirty street in the rain. Because of my day job, I am obsessed with light balance and shadow, so that's what attracts me to still life on my white kitchen table in the dark, and a few mini maglights. This weekend, I plan to try a few tricks of luminating with LED lights to emulate a 10K of 20K stage space light.

I'm looking forward to seeing what you produce with a maglight! hint for a new project of the month on UF!?

Thanks again, and have a great day!

Great still life! It seems that not to many people here at UF are into photographic still life, but I'm one of them. And I see you are still busy with the maglite. I MUST try this.

Anyway, the focused round pool of light gives the impression of a spotlight (if not as bright) and focuses the viewer quite directly on the object in the spotlight. I also lioke the diffused shadow, from moving the lite I suppoe on a long exposure. Clever. I also like the choice of cutting the fruit but only slightly separating the halves. Very good work, Joel.

:) I enjoy honesty very much Jeanette! thank you very much for your comments! I would have to say that the lighting is very different from anything else I've done. It was a reach... going for that 'old railroad worker hanging out at the bar after a long day in the yard'. You're so right, the pose is better than the lighting.

thanks again jeanette!

I like how you posed the lemon halfs agaist each other ....but i can´t stand the lightning here, the shadow under the lemon is not nice... no, you can do much better Joel.
