I didn't really have the opportunity to hang around for better light (and won't be going to Sri Lanka any time soon!). How could I have made the best of the available light?

Someone has mentioned a polariser, but I don't want to complicate my photography too much while I'm still learning. Would it be worth the complication for this type of shot?

Again Stephen, very strong composition. really good there but the sky & weather worked against you. Light is stronger in this one but still flat. Those oranges and rich greens would scream if this was sunny conditions with a blue sky. Any chance of a reshoot of this.
