Really nice pic, I like you work with b&w with that hint of sepia, but I really like the composition and their intense faces'
expression.

Thanks, Robert. Of all the pictures I have posted at USEFILM this one is by far my favorite.

Jan this is great. Great framing and positioning of the subjects. I like this a lot. Much more than the egg shot. Black and white really works here as does the grain.

Ok, I like this image so much I don't even know where to begin!
The composition and tone are just wonderful!
I think what I like the most, though, is Joel's expression and the way Lisa is peeking out from behind him!
Fantastic portrait alltogether and deserving of a 7/7! Well done!

Wowee - Thanks, Doyle, for the really great report card on this one. It is my favorite of all the pictures I have posted to date. I had a pile of variations and I settled on this one; almost the least conventional of the variations. My daughter is a manager of an IT department but she has a Visual Arts & Photography degree and has paid her dues in the photo world. She still has equipment and does take/make photos from time to time but no longer has the heavy-duty interest of previous times. For that previous experience she does tolerate Joel and me quite well (I think....?). Or she hides it well.
Thanks again for the comments.

Striking portraiture Jan . . . surprising to me and mostly because it really does work!! The editing is . . . uhhhhh . . . really different (unique . . . creative . . . etc) and yet it gives a really great result!!!! I think Robin said it well with the 'delightfully different' assertion. I'd have never thought of this. I see Joel seems to have a digital camera strap . . . THAT I really LOVE!! I sense he's like me a bit (I take mine with me EVERYWHERE - it prevents UFO landings . . . and you know the moment I forget it . . . )! Have to wonder how Lisa tolerates you two!! They say if you can't beat 'em, join 'em . . . that's how Marny handled it. Anyway - this is brilliant . . . lovely classic look and obvious 7/7.

Regards,
Doyle I <~~~~~

Sally - thanks for the comments and you raise a good question. I played with this photo before posting and tried this on a bigger canvas with matching color to see if it enhanced the portrait. My personal opinion was that it did not and the frame confines seemed to give better focus to the subjects. Of course that was just my own take on it.

I like the effect you've applied to this portrait - the way it stands out immediately drew me to the thumbnail.
I like the diagonal composition - and her face is lovely!
I'm curious to know how the image would look if the lighter colour were the same as the usefilm background.

Del-- Thanks so much for your comments. The picture is a hybrid of posed and candid. We were both taking pictures of everything and Joel and I were always carrying and pointing our cameras. We were desensitized to seeing the cameras. Lisa, on the other hand, was missing an earring and did not want to be photographed with one earring missing so she began to hide behind Joel. This picture resulted. An example of a picture Joel took of me can be found at:
http://www.usefilm.com/Image.asp?ID=1234714
Joel took that one after i had a couple of shots of Jack Daniels and i was zoned out.

Pat - Thanks for your kind words about the portrait of Joel & Lisa.
I hope you are safe and life is treating you well. I looked over your pictures from Iraq and especially like the photos of the children. The Sheik portrait is also one of my favorites.
When I was stationed in Vietnam from '68 to '70 I carried a 16 mm Minox and took pictures of folks in villages with an emphasis on children. I recall their faces and in most cases smiles to this day. Looking back on those pictures now they tend to erase the vivid visions and smell of war; something very difficult to forget. You will know what I mean years from now when you look at your photos and start reconstructing in your mind the time you spent in Iraq.
Wishing you the best, Jan

Onie - First off, thanks so much for the kind words about the portrait of Lisa & Joel. I do believe that this is a classic "Intimate Portrait" .. at least for me it is. And as for the other comments: waffle away anytime; I am with you on the thoughts about missing them and the continuity of life.

John - First of all, let me thank you for the complete and thoughtful critique. Your observations are right on (and mostly flattering). On your point of the alternative way to crop, I had the first version (before it was converted to Duo-tone) pretty much as you had suggested. I played with the cropping a bit and wound up with this approach but it was a matter of tweaking and re-cropping before I was satisfied. I picked this approach for a couple of reasons: (1) I wanted the lettering in the camera strap to show; and (2) I felt the balance of light and dark was better top to bottom and left to right in the lower one-third to be more pleasing this way. Obviously it is a matter of preference and I do see your point of view. I truly appreciate the input.
--Thanks again and best regards, Jan

John Hatz John Hatz   {K:156973} 1/9/2007
Unique portrrait Jan, first element that I like is the original way that appears the second face of the woman, ...not at the same high, covered half way from his body...well surely the 'column of the house' as greek saying about the man...
Also the high contrast and the soft sepia way with the grain looks of the shadows adds also originality, personaly I took that element as artistique way and you get a very good result that work form me. Last, the absolutely emptiness of the background is good too.
Perchaps I could put him and her a bit at the right to cut him from his sholder a bit...also to put out from the frame that word and also to left some more smace at the left....just for more artistique way, I mean bot so centered but that is just a taste of mine and nothing else.

Annemette -- Thanks so much for your very nice comments. I truly appreciate them.
It does have a bit of "John & Yoko" style to it now that you mention it. I wonder if I was influenced by a similar picture from years ago; it is quite possible.

PS: Canada and denmark are both beautiful and wonderful countries - a very difficult choice, but only one of them has your mother!

Dear Jan
A very special portrait due to the contrast, tones and expressions and also the composition. It reminds me of sth. that could have been made of Yoko Ono and John Lennon - I can´t really say why, but I like it!
Yes I imagine it must be hard when they leave again.
I have often considered moving to Canada, but the thought of getting even further away from my mother (who resides in the opposite part of Denmark than me), doesn´t agree with me.
Blah blah
Well done:-)

How nice to meet you both!
Is this Lisa's relative stature to Joel?

:) ahhh, something different in portraiture, and that is what grabs my attention...the grain adds a lot of appeal, and the composition is excellent....a fun portrait with lots of charm :) Great work Jan.

OMG; didn't realize she was partially dressed. I am pretty sure she had both socks on, though.

Howdy Pops!

Wow.. it is difficult to judge a picture of your self :)

I like this! the classic film look is perfectly applied, and is very well balanced and composed! It's a good thing you covered up the fact that Lisa forgot to put the second earring in. :)

well done pops! 7+!

Thanks for your comments, Jarrod. It was pretty dark because the front window of the house was blocked by a Christmas tree and we were in the front section with no side windows and no artificial light. I just let the camera's light meter do the work and that is what the exposure calculated to.

This is a really great image, a very interesting portrait. It must have been very dark to use ISO1600 at a 30th!

Thanks, Robin. We did have a good time and thanks for your kind words. Lisa had an ear infection that caused some discomfort but it did not seem to slow her down much. And Joel rarely was seen without a camera connected to his face in one fashion or another.

I like, I like...great portrait Jan! Love the contrast and the composition...casual and delightfully different from the "formal" portrait (which I prefer!).

It's always great to have the family in for the holidays...but then they have to return home, not so great. Hope you all had a wonderful time together...

Happy New Year...Robin
