About One shot I've wanted to get for a very long time presented itself tonight & last night and I only noticed by chance; this one is from last night while out in West Virginia. Thought I'd put this one in the Big & Little category because of perceived reality vs. reality itself...strange how that works. :) Had a Canon 2X converter on there as well.

Hi Rob. I apologize if I got a little (or a lot) carried away with my last comment. Astronomy is such a passion of mine that sometimes I overdo it with explanations. I certainly never meant to offend you.

Hi Rob. I was fortunate enough to be at the lake for parts of each month starting in May. There, the sky although not pristine, is pretty dark--certainly better than at home. With the unobstructed horizon over the water, I had a front row seat to watch the planets as they lined up and changed positions. I posted one of my pictures from May 17 of Mercury and the Moon. In the Comments section, I added one from May 18 of Mercury, the Moon, and Venus in a row. I enjoyed great telescopic views of Saturn. These planets have gone from the early evening sky. However, the mighty Jupiter is now the highlight.
Generally, I would not disagree with you and I most certainly hope you do not take offense. Truth is, the line up was Mercury, Venus, and Sarurn. The Moon danced around amongst them. Jupiter was there also but a piece away. Mercury is the most illusive naked eye planet, so it was great to have a good view of it, especially in such pretty combinations. Mars was not visible in the Spring/early Summer evening sky. Now, it rises in the morning showing off its reddish hue.
Here is a web site that has all kinds of information. I used Charleston W.V. for the coordinates. http://heavens-above.com/main.aspx?Loc=Charleston&Lat=38.350&Lng=-81.633&Alt=175&TZ=EST From the Whole Sky Chart link, you can get a display of the sky for any date and time. Here is June 17, 2007 at 8 pm. http://heavens-above.com/skychart.asp?Y=2007&M=6&D=17&H=20&N=0&Lat=38.35&Lng=-81.633&Loc=Charleston&TZ=EST&SL=on&SN=on&BW=0&SZ=500 and June 18 at 8pm http://heavens-above.com/skychart.asp?Y=2007&M=6&D=18&H=20&N=0&Lat=38.35&Lng=-81.633&Loc=Charleston&TZ=EST&SL=on&SN=on&BW=0&SZ=500 From the first page, you can see all kinds of neat stuff, like when the International Space Station (ISS) will pass overhead in your area and where to look to see it. If you are looking particularly for a close encounter of the Moon and Mars, check Nov.27 at 1 am. On Dec.23, they will be especially close. In fact, some locations will see an occulation of Mars by the Moon--not sure right now if we are in the area to witness that or not. I am sorry if it was Mars that you were especially counting on capturing near the Moon.
In any case, your picture is a great shot. As I mentioned before, getting a picture with Lunar detail with a camera when the Moon is less than three days old is an accomplishment. Indeed, a lot of people don't even notice the Moon when it is this young.

Hi...thanks for the compliment!! Did you know that this summer Mars, Venus and Saturn were all visible and lined up in the sky? I promise this is Mars. :) btw...really like your comments!

Great shot, Rob. It is not easy to capture the Moon when it is this young and you even got some detail. It has been great fun watching the Moon and some of the planets doing their dance over the last while. Having them close together has presented some great picture opportunities. You certainly took good advantage of this one. The only thing is, I would say this is Venus and not Mars. In mid June, Mars was in the morning sky just before sunrise. Venus was the bright jewel in the evening.

Great shot - wish I had gotten one last month when the moon and three of the planets/stars were in a vertical alignment to the moon.
