hi Chris, Thanks for the welcome to usefilm - saw this shot on the Photo monthly day and still really like it. very striking - your right about the shadow band - a bit of reduction would be nice. but since the cause of the shadow is in shot - its not so distrubing -- like the arrowtip in focus idea as well... look forward to some more.
regards Ezra.

All, Thanks for your comments - particularly the suggested crop, which I have attached - more POP, eh? I think you're right - especially when viewed at large size. Mark - I recall at the time thinking about a shot with the arrow tip sharp and the archer blurred out, but it didn't look like it would have as much impact - I guess I should just have taken it anyway. I can photograph the archers again - they're all friends of mine, so will try some other shots in due course.

Neat shot! Do you think it might also be interesting to have the tip of the arrow in focus instead of the archer? different effect. Just a thought! cheers, Marc

Chris, I would like to see a vertical or square version too here. For a square shot, you could show her arm entirely at the bottom, and crop the left side. DOF is good, and I don't think the light is so bad.

Dawna, Steve,
Thank you both for the feedback. The vertical format shot was also taken, as well as some Dawna right in the line of fire, which helped reduce the shadow on her face somewhat. Standby for those uploads shortly. I wasn't at liberty unfortunately to choose either the day/time of the shot (deadline pressure), or to point the archers in a different direction (safety regs). Had I been prepared I should have brought a reflector or some such to reduce the shadow stripe, but I didn't anticipate such great sunlight. Thanks again for the feedback and do let me know what you think of the others - I'll be posting one a day for a few days. Chris

Hi Chris,
This is very nice. I would like to see this with a little crop on the sides. I think it would add some POP. Excellent use of DOF.

I think this is very good - I have never shot archery mostly hockey as far as sports go but I like it. I would also like to see a vertical, with a close crop just down the side of her face maybe. love the dof and the angle you shot, you are getting close to her line of fire so to speak, makes it exciting I think.
