It's the (almost perfect) symmetry that makes this picture truly work. Great idea, outstanding composition, and the nakedness adds to the feel of hopelessness, isolation, despair etc.

I think your image expresses exactly what you had intended this image to be in your 'about'. Very very very lonely..depressed...agony...isolated..left alone...painful...imprisoned...scary too! Nice lighting and contrast.

Christopher, Both versions work for me. I'm hard pressed to say which one I like more. It's amazing how a little bit here or there changes the emotional context so much!

Hi Christopher, Congratulations on a great image. Would make a superb album cover or poster for a band like Therapy or similar. On the darker/lighter versions, I like both - in some ways I find the lighter version lends a "positive" aspect - like "Here's this guy, he may be depressed, whatever, but here comes the light and he's about to float back into it". Almost like he's been taking a rest from the world, meditating, thinking it all over and is about to come back with new energy and drive. I think I get this feeling from the light on his shoulders and head more than anywhere else.
The darker version has tons of Steve K's patented "POP!" to it (isn't it great how he find that!), and for me it says "The guy is really depressed, hiding from the light, and whatever is going on outside the door of his quiet little dark world". Somehow the bit that hits me in the darker one is the harsh ground texture, as well as the reduced light on the subject.
Top class emotive images both - the sort of shots I'd be thrilled to have on my wall - possibly side by side or on opposite walls facing each other for the "transition" effect.
Great work, you just became my first top 100 nominee Chris M.

Definitely a brave production, from conception to finish an excellent image, the darker rendition does seem more suited agreed, excellent work chris~

Steve, I understand the subjectivity of these things - but I do appreciate the comments that push me to explore a different interpretation. I actually like the darker one also and intend to get into the darkroom soon and work on a final - the first one was a test print I'd made and have had it around just to 'consider' where to go with it. Again, thanks for the suggestion!

Christopher, I would have to agree with Steve, in this instance the darker image has a much weightier feel to it... wonderful!

The darker version is wonderful. Exactly what I had envisioned, but you must remember, it's purely subjective. Others won't have the same taste.

Thanks to all who commented on this. I've included a digitally altered version of this image here to respond to Steve Kompier's suggestion that darker would be better - Steve, is this sort of what you were thinking? I'm not a digital wiz so basically I simply used levels to alter the mid-tones, then selected the foreground area and brought that area down a bit. I am only using digital to try and model how I want the final print to look, so don't hammer me for my poor digital editing skills :) . Again, thanks for taking the time to comment!

Very nice and well executed. I would like to see it a little darker, but that's just me.
