About Ever since I took the original image through a dirty shop window in Rome, I have wanted to try to find a way to extract the image behind the grunge. Have I succeeded? Any ideas?

beautiful and emotional work, the title works well to enhance the mood.

Great image! The "grunge" helps make this work. You have succeeded in my opinion. Very good work!!!

The head in the top left with its eyes open and that expression evokes a powerful feeling. To me this resembles a mass grave with the one with eyes open expressing a resigned look at his lot in life. Very moving Patricia, the grain helps a lot I feel.

this is it - just the way it is - grain, b&w, damaged and hopeful...

excellent...

Hi Patricia, I think that however the image was, you have ended up with something special...it's very touching. Thank you! :) d

Patricia; this is a vaguely disturbing image, so if that is important, you've succeeded with me-- black lifeless eyes, broken heads-- a bit gruesome even though they're dolls. I'd never know it was taken through a grungy window. One technical "nit" is the grain across the photo. I think I'd try the "soften" or "blur" filters in PSP, but maybe you intended the grain for effect? ie these could be clay pieces and need the grain-- certainly not a fatal flaw, and just a thought on my part. You've done well w/ a tough one to work on.

The amazed, but quiet and fearless doll ,"alive", wide-opened eyes, gives a little of hope in this picture which evokes a slaughter... In this sense, you made a success of your project....BW gives a strong impact...

I agree the grainy appearence adds to the mood. Thank goodness for dirty shop windows:)

Thanks for posting the original Patricia. I like the colour version too, cropped like the new version, but maybe warmed and lightened just a little. It has a different feel than the grainier desaturated one.
I want that healing tool! I have to get 7 one of these days. I use the cloning one instead at this point.
I'm discovering not always to discard what looks a failure when I check my LCD screen, sometimes I've almost deleted what turns out to be a favourite photo. But you don't have that temptation with film.:)

Thanks for your comments.
Leslie - Here is the original. As you can see, it was pretty much of a mess. Yesterday I learned about PS's healing brush tool which was what stimulated me to go back to this image. What a wonderful thing - those streaks just melted away! Now I wish I had taken more photos of the window (I went to the spot next time I was in Rome and only found another boutique). At the time I thought I was just wasting film.

Even thought they are dolls, your title and the image are quite suggestive...I see granin and scratches and other sighns of age that only enhance the image...would love to see the original just to see how you did succeed...this is a great composition with excellent tones and contrast..

I find it a very poignant image Patricia. Once the treasured dolls of some little child.

Yes, keep it like that. Perhaps the idea isn?t a new one (I come to think of a shot by Christer Strömholm) but it works out very well.
Yes it is creepy although you know they are only dolls.
Good work,
